Hey Team.

Very new to arcade restoration and electronics repair. I have a complete Candy Cab, Power Supply, CRT and an MVS MOBO + Game Cart. The MVS has a Z80 error, so I started with a clean and replaced the stock battery with a battery holder. I had no magic smoke when I turned the system back on, but the same error. I take that as a win, as it probably means I've transplanted the battery correctly.

My limited knowledge means I don't know what constitutes a problem with the board. It's banged up with scratches in the traces, a huge glob of solder on the JAMMA connector, what appear to be corroded chips. Someone bent all the caps over for some reason, I don't know if that's an issue. I don't know what I don't know, y'know?
I'm very keen to use this board as a learning excersise, but it would be good to know that any problems are just related to the board. If I fix it correctly but there's an issue elsewhere I'd never know.

What do people use to test that everything is ok and wired up correctly? Should I just get a pandora box with a JAMMA connection, or buy a working MVS to swap in? What do people normally use for testing and diagnostics.

Without fixing my problems for me, does the board in the attached images look like something an absolute beginner should come back to, or should I man up and work through the issues one-by-one? Thanks in advance.

For anyone interested: I put a unibios in the board above which let me check things like basic IO, checkerboard etc.

Happily I put a game cart in and it booted, which was a surprise. I'm getting audio in game home screen / menus but not the actual game. There's my Z80 error. I'll have a go at fixing this board, but will replace the it in the mean time. MVS boards are cheap, and I'm assuming they come from China in better condition than the one I have.

I also bought the cheapest JAMMA P.Box and plugged it in to see what info it could give me. Speakers, monitor, controls etc. all good. Coin mech all good. It's a good tool to see which control and lever microswitches were only firing half the time. More parts on the way but I'll move to a more specific board next time.
