Hey ! just got back from a 1 week trip with my family: 7 days without playing any shmups is so long so i decided to fire up my lovely Windy II for one or two credits on ESPgaluda...

Surprise !!! : The monitor doesnt start , Chassis is beeping , PCB works but no picture on the CRT . No more beautiful neck glow either... ;(

The setup: original PB7534-1 chassis recaped and new flyback installed a few years ago. Do you remember all those blown up Yaton cabs ? :D:D Toshiba K29ch55 tube, original PSU.

My guess: Something is preventing the chassis to power on the tube .

important note: image was shaking a bit in the last few weeks so i knew that something was wrong.

What should i test first ? can this be a PSU issue ? HOT issue ?

My good friend and CRT god @Mrhide will help me this this repair but any input from the community is appreciated !!

thx !!!

coincidentally, he sent me the above video while I was on my way to pick up the gunblade ... and the nt-3501 on gunblade is doing the same thing! (thus why the game was free! "the screen doesn't work!" )

The HOT (Horizontal deflection Output Transistor) is indeed blown and the lamp test works once the HOT is removed.

For me it's a BY2532 and Arcadepartsandrepair tells us that

FJL6920 High Voltage Color Display Horizontal Deflection Output Transistor HOT. TO-264 Package with BCE on this NPN triple diffussed planar silicon transistor. This HOT can be used to replace most TO-247 and TO-264 High Output Transistors in most arcade monitors. This FJL6920TU can replace the following 2SC5149, 2SC5589, 2SC4542, 2SC5150, 2SC5144, 2SC5411, 2SC3686, 2SC3688, 2SC4692, BU2525AF, BU2532AL, BU2520AX, BU2520AW, BU4530AL, 2SC4769, 2SC5296, 2SC5297, 2SC5302, 2SC5584, 2SC5588, 2SC5143, 2SC5387, 2SC3997, 2SC5552, 2SC4288A, FJAF6808D, J6808D, FJL6820 and many others. The FJL6920 is an Vceo 800V and Ic 20A and is a very reliable and robust HOT since it’s amperage rating is about twice as high as most monitors require.

I've ordered 2 from digikey yesterday at 18h30 and it's I just get it this morning! damn they are fast!
and the toshiba from above is a 2SC4288A which hey, can also be replaced by the same part!

Hopefully I don't blow one and we'll fix both screens!

To be continued.

update on my neotec nt-3501:

it was indeed the HOT! I went and did a (almost complete) cap kit while I was there and voila:

it actually looks pretty darn good for a 39" (36 viewable) monitor! :)

and why not a little video to show it off

will update when we fix @Barth0lin0's toshiba!

Damn ! same issue. beep beep beep on startup ;(

what the hell is going on with this chassis !

ok so we need to do more testing and figure out what component is bad and not just replace the hot(which i have 2 more btw ;) )

Bring me the monitor! 😝

quick update: remove the chassis : new HOT is blown. So something faulty on the chassis before the HOT is causing the issue. Took a few pics of the chassis. It have been repaired by someone on this forum a few years ago: I was not the owner of the cab back then : ( new caps. new flyback, repaired traces, something else ?? )

there is a repaired section under the chassis that seems very bad....i have no clue if it have been "repaired" like this back then...

Will bring the chassis at @Mrhide 's workshop to troubleshoot the isssue. Someone have any hint ?

HOT's thermal pad seems ok. PSU is tested ok .

I might send the chassis to Sharp Image or arcademonitorrepair.com if we end up not finding the issue.

thanks for your help !

update : i decided to send the chassis to Sharp image to get it refurbished. Since it was already recaped and had a new flyback: they ended up replacing the faulty vertical IC and blown HOT

Since i forgot to include the remote board in the shipping ( my bad.....) , they werent able to fully test the chassis before sending it back to me.

Plugged everything yesterday: i

  • i know have a neck glow! but no image on the screen. Tried with 2 different PCBs without any luck . sound is working.
  • no usual crt startup crt "clicking" sound when it get the video signal
  • chassis gets the video signal from the pcb: normal hissing sound when connecting / disconnecting the vga cable from the jammafier.
  • i have the usual static electricity on the outside of the crt when touching it
  • i heard the degauss sound when i press the degauss button but nothing on the screen appears
  • some "white glow" on the screen when powering it off. Nothing when powering it on .
  • no beeping sound from the chassis (HOT have been replaced)
  • messing with the remote board pot does nothing on the screen
  • messing with the flyback brightness pot does nothing on the screen...

Every wire is correctly connected ... triple checked

Anyone have an idea of the NEW issue ???

thx

The last chassis I worked on where everything seemed to work but the screen pot did nothing was a bad neck socket. The G2 pin was not making good contact.
