"WIP" King of Fighters 98 Ultimate Match AES/MVS

Thanks for your feedback. I'll install the Geolith emulator, which seems closer to the console's behavior. I'll also test it on MAME, which also behaves differently from the emulator I'm using and has a debugger. The hack is done using Winkawaks + Chinese Loader_dev, which allows me to edit in hexadecimal in real time.

Hi elrayzeur,

If you're agreed, i'll be pleased to add your latest version on FB Neo (actually supported as kof98ult set from 2020)

All the best

I have just tested FBNeo with a ROM hack, and it indeed does not exhibit the issue in the emulator. However, I noticed something unusual in this stage: the game experiences significant slowdowns in certain parts. This may be related to the graphical glitches present in the stage, which also occur on the original hardware and in the FPGA implementation of the hardware.

On MiSTer, there is no slowdown at all, regardless of the moves performed or the characters’ actions.

The slowdown is only occurring in this stage, which is the one that has issues on both the original hardware and on MiSTer; no other stage in FBNeo exhibited any slowdown.

Tested this on the same Neosd pro and the graphics are fixed. The only issue I encounter was on certain moves there is a popping/staic sound instead of the actual sound. I was using Geese again. If I recall correctly, this was not an issue on the previous .neo with the graphics issue.

Unfortunately, even in the most recent version of the hack, the bug in the traffic stage still occurs. Additionally, during the introduction of the Korea Team, there was an instance where a character’s voice did not match the opponent. The opponent was Choi, but the voice sounded like Kim’s. This happened precisely at the moment when the two characters were facing each other before the fight. However, during Choi’s introduction, both his animation and his voice played normally.
Hi!

In my tests (FBNeo core), I’m not seeing the bug in the Esaka stage. However, I can confirm that the bug does occur during Choi’s intro. It seems that the issue happens specifically in all of Choi’s intros, where his voice gets mixed up with Kim’s voice.

Bye

Thanks for your feedback, as I explained to Danyo in a private message. After my PC crashed, I lost many files, including those containing the hexadecimal addresses and modifications made or still to be made. I had stopped the project.
The fact that Danyo converted the ROM and that I was able to share it has remotivated me. I'm starting the P1 ROM from scratch. Kyo Nest and Athena have a special feature that doesn't work on all emulators. This is fixed; currently, I no longer have any slowdown.
The problem came from a modification that was supposed to slightly increase the framerate, but it causes issues on MAME, for example, whereas it doesn't under Winkawaks.
Unfortunately, I don't remember what the other modifications I made were for, which is why I prefer to start over with a clean ROM. Thanks again for your feedback; version 2026 is coming.

I am a fan of the King of Fighters franchise, and KOF ‘98 is by far my favorite. Your hack turned out exceptionally well, and I can only thank you for all the work you have put into it.

In the tests I conducted, I only noticed these two issues involving the stage and Choi; however, I believe that by redoing it from scratch, you will be able to resolve the problem.

Wark91, from Mister’s Discord, also identified an issue on the screen when the Neo Geo logo appears and the memory count is displayed, which results in a graphical error during attract mode

I noticed this last night; the boot logo is supposed to be disabled, but in MVS mode after rebooting, it appears. The EGHT team placed the names of the new characters there, as well as the life/power bars. However, I don't know what the memory count is. Is it the program size? I know it's at the beginning of p1: $10A longword Total P ROM data size in bytes.

Sorry for double post.

I'm a contributor to the Chinese website hackrom.cn. I have a lot of tools, but none of them are useful to me because they're all in Chinese. However, a developer shared a fantastic tool for the King of Fighters series, which can translate the game. The Chinese are quite particular about this, which is really great. The language files are in different types of Chinese; I don't remember how I converted the RAW file to Chinese (I left the TXT file in the RAR archive). My computer is supposed to display Chinese and Japanese. If someone can translate a .lng file into English, this hack could progress very quickly and my dream could become a reality. I want to run SNK vs. Capcom: Chaos on the 1997/98 engine and have a true SNK game with dodges/rolls and stages worthy of our console, even if it means reworking the originals like I did for The Eye of Typhoon Neo Geo. This site has hacks with Veag/Bison in KOF '97 and Iori Crazy svc version in 2001.

Is your hack based on the anniversary version, right? Well, I tested it on MiSTer, and this anniversary version has exactly the same bug in the Esaka stage 😅 — which means the issue already originates from the base romhack.

I'll have to find out where this problem comes from. Maybe an addressing problem in P2, can you test the rom, kof98 boss edition 2009? This is the first version of kof98ae2016.

I apologize for the delay. I tested the ROM hack you shared, and it presents the same error. The only difference is that instead of a black bar, it now shows a maroon-colored bar. As for the Boss ROM hack you mentioned, I was unable to find it on the internet to test it on the MiSTer.

If the ROM hack you shared is indeed the Boss Edition you mentioned as the first one, then that explains it.
