Has anyone here made a cable that goes from the 246/256 mode on the motherboard to a switch that they could flip to change the modes without having to open the unit? If so, where can I purchase one?

You can wire up a switch like this so you don’t have to open up the system ever again.

How do I do that? I have no soldering experience nor the equipment.
Probably the easiest way is to get a 3 pin header and wire up a little 3 pin toggle switch, so that way you don’t solder the wires to the board.

Do you know where I could find all the materials listed?

I mean, it shouldn’t be to hard to find the parts online. But I can help you out.
Rocker toggle switch: https://www.ebay.com/itm/182710602493
Wire with pin sockets: https://www.ebay.com/itm/284221496341
Disconnect terminals(if you don’t want to solder the wires to the switch): https://www.ebay.com/itm/332320402390
Edit: you will need to find smaller disconnect terminals for the rocker switch. They can be found at your local hardware store or auto shop as well. Same thing with the rocker switch and wire if you want to start as soon as possible as opposed to waiting for the stuff to arrive.

How much smaller should each piece be?

If your Namco system 256 doesn’t have the Ethernet port installed, you can use that hole to mount the switch, if it does, you could either remove it or make a hole somewhere on the metal case or leave it outside the system.
Here is an excellent example of what this YouTuber has done:

My personal goal is to not have it right up against the unit. I want it to be extended out like a cable so I can press it from several feet away from the cabinet. The video you showed me is pretty sweet, though. I do have the Ethernet port on mine.

Oh, that’s a pretty neat idea, it should be fairly easy to execute.

Do I need anything to be longer from the list or am I free to get what we discussed already?
You might want to get longer cable, I think an Ethernet cable should work If you split the ends and connect them to the other cable.

I'm confused on why I would need to go that route. Can you explain more?

I’m just saying that only if you want to extend the cable some more, tbh, I really have no idea what you are trying to achieve at this point. I would also like to know some more.

Ah my bad. Hmmm...let me try to re-phrase and see if that helps. I'd like to put a toggle switch in place for the 246/256 mode so that I can switch between them but at a distance.
