Your skepticism is warranted, but it's true. It's even wired for analog on both players. Even IO outputs. You can see that in the CP bucket not all the wires are populated but in the back it's fully populated. Just add harness. It's logical if you're Sega anticipating how you might want to use this cabinet in the future without requiring operators to buy a whole new cab. There are actually a few other unused things in this cab, though the IO is the only readily accessible one that I know of.

I have no idea what they would have used it for since there’s no room whatsoever for a second player but leaving it in is pretty interesting. I wonder if a more traditional vs kit would have been able to take advantage with different software circumstances. Also maybe that’s just how they are used to making them.
 
To be fair the cab can be used for hardware as far back as NAOMI. I’ve always just had an extension harness made for p2 when doing head to head setups, so you could probably do that with these cabs. I don’t think it’s common in Japan to do that with JVS linkable hardware though. Like mentioned before it’s probably a future-proofing thing. The analog stuff, and possibly the 2p stuff may have been used for Soul Reverse or something, I haven’t looked too far into that CP. Thanks again for proving my info wrong, it’s good to know that versatility is at least there
 
That's really interesting, especially considering there isn't a two-player control panel that exists for the APM3 multi-cab as far as I know. Conceivably you could put older hardware (even something relatively new that still supports local, like a RingEdge) in there, but you still couldn't make use of that compatibility as long as the controls aren't there unless you were daisy-chaining cabs together or something. Feel free to correct me if I'm totally off-base here.

I understand the advantages of having room to play comfortably at a cabinet, but I wonder why local versus support (in games at least even if the hardware in supports it in theory) has gone away with the newer Vewlixes, Grigio, and now APM3 cabs. Obviously as the amount of people going to arcades decreases it's understandable to prioritise internet play, but it's a shame to see a nice feature go away.

I haven’t been in an arcade in Japan since 2014 but at the time it was pretty much standard for each floor or area to be one game and all the cabinets to be networked. I think that’s just how they roll now. It’s very anonymous feeling- like you’re playing against someone in the room you’re in but you have no idea which person it is. I guess this would curb KOF 97 versus city style stabbings though.

It's not just what exists today but what they might want to create in the future. I think the home button is a hint at the thought process. They could release a game that has more than eight buttons, or a twin-stick game, etc. In which case they just use the 2P inputs for more buttons or another stick. Better in that case to wire up the standard set of 2P controls to give you all the flexibility you might need, even if you don't actually put in a second player.

I was there in 2018 and that is definitely the new normal, but the advantages (more space for single-player use) seem pretty minor compared to what you lose (the opportunity for others to play with you even if they wanted to). If arcades and/or fighting games in arcades hadn't already died out in the west this would have definitely been a sticking point for anyone looking to get games in, because it essentially means that you need two full cabinets to play any multiplayer game. No big deal for a large well-established arcade perhaps, but a smaller operation or a thing where you want to have only a few cabinets for side business? Absolute rubbish.

Like what if I'm at the arcade with a friend of mine who isn't as familiar with the game and I want to show them something? Good luck if they're on the opposite side of you in a loud arcade.
 
Would anyone here with experience buying from KC outside of SoCal (i.e. not physically going to his warehouse to pick it up) have any idea of how the process usually works? I've ordered a Noir cab from him and have been trying to communicate with him to get a sense of when it might arrive for the past week or so, but I can't help but feel like the language barrier is proving a big challenge here, because all I've gotten is "I'll tell you a day before" and that it will come "in my free time", but after I gave him some days for this week now he's told me he can't do it this week.

I'm happy to be flexible, but given the size of the thing and that I live in an apartment building, I need to be there when it arrives, but can't do that at a moment's notice when I have to work most days of the week. Just wondering if anyone has any insight or if that kind of short notice is just typical of this sort of freight delivery.
 
Yea it's really convenient if you're able to make a day trip and just show up with the cash. Done that like 5 times already.

I can imagine, but as I said I don't live in the area (as I would imagine is also the case for many prospective customers), and despite living in California myself I don't have a car or any experience driving that kind of distance, so it is what it is.

+1 for that, when I was waiting for my cabs to come in they were delayed almost 2 months from the original date due to shipping. He gave me about a week notice when they showed up and were ready to go so I could get prepared/take the day off work/etc. I didn't get much in the way of communication when waiting but he will pull through for sure. He's just got a ton of volume to work through. I'm local but I imagine the process is about the same with having it shipped. It's likely he's waiting on arrival for containers that are super backed up right now.

If it's something he already has in stock, my guess is he's working to pull it out of his warehouse and depending on where that is, it could take awhile. I didn't take pictures last time I was there (2-3 years ago) but the place was stacked floor to ceiling with cabs and carefully put in/taken out. I've seen the guy work, it's pretty wild.

I'm also in California. Initially delivery was expected within a few weeks after payment. That was delayed. And delayed. Three months later my cabinets arrived. Still waiting for stools. I guess you have to be patient. You'll be notified prior to shipment and also receive photos of what you're getting. It's a unique buying experience.

To be more specific, and kind of in response to @Kagaden 's experience, the unit I've ordered appears to be (at least in photos, given he sent several and some were specifically set up to highlight any damage) already in-stock at his warehouse, and presumably didn't need to wait for a cargo arrival from Asia or anything like that. If it were though, it's easy to imagine a scenario where that freight process is delayed outside of KC's control.

On a similar note regarding the (Taito) stools though, I actually ordered one of those as well and apparently the fellow KC outsourced to for the shipping on that sent it to the wrong address. KC of course has committed to me to make it right, so I don't necessarily blame him, but if anyone else has been waiting on a stool it might be worth reaching out to see if the same happened to yours.
 
Mine were also in stock and photos provided. Still needed to wait three months for delivery. Not sure why. Something about not having someone available to transport them. Hopefully you don't need to wait as long. The good news is that you'll get what you want eventually.
