Hello, I was planning on using the PS2 controller ports for Soul Calibur II, but there's this large cable in the way. Any ideas on whether this is necessary, what it is, how to get it out of the way?

Unrelated, can I use a SUN PSU plugged in using this JVS adapter and have this Namco JAMMA i/o connected? Would the 246 detect the i/o board even without it directly receiving power?
My plan is to use the D-sub 15 and RCA audio ports directly to a monitor and speakers.

Thanks for any help!

That cable is the power cable that powers the whole system up. What you can do is move the cable to the middle of the controller ports, it would still be quite annoying and your best bet is to get some controller extension cables.
In regards to powering the system and if the JAMMA I/O pcb will still work without power, the answer is no. The I/O pcb still needs power to work. The JAMMA pcb also doesn’t need the vga or audio cables plugged in either. You might as well use a JVS I/O pcb instead as the 246 is JVS compatible.

Yes. A JVS adapter *is required* else it won't boot.

Would the 246 detect the i/o board even without it directly receiving power?
No it will not. you have the adapter to give it power below your ribbon cable in the picture above.

Yep, what @Mrhide said is right! :D if you have a jamma harness already, you might as well use that. the system still needs either the JAMMA pcb or a JVS I/O board or else you will see the “JVS MASTER NOT FOUND” screen.

Ah, I see. I don't have a Jamma harness and am trying to make this setup
-easy to travel with
-easy to set up at tournaments
-as few cables as possible
So is the simplest thing to get a JVS i/o board and run it with just the usb cable plugged in? Would this one do? Thanks again! https://www.ebay.ca/itm/165012712542
That pcb will work although you still need a way to power it up as well. If you want to use the smallest yet compatible JVS pcb, I would suggest this one:https://www.ebay.com/itm/Namco-Time...2349624.m46890.l49286&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0
It’s for Time Crisis 4 but the only thing you need plugged in is the power (5 volts DC) and USB cable. As long as the system detects it you will be fine and the PlayStation controllers will still work.

NO! it's a cheap copy of what you already have: that namco JAMMA thing IS a JVS adapter. Simply power it up and connect that ribbon:

no need to use it if you can use your PS2 controllers (@Franco23444: can he do that on a 246? ... sorry I'm a full arcade guy and putting a console controller on these machine is a non sense :D )

And no need to have it portable: I have 2 Tekken5 cabinets :) .... one is running soul Caliber 3 ( or any other 2x6 games since I do have that multi dongle) and one is dedicated to running Tekken 5 DR.

@Mrhide I think they are trying to make it as portable as possible, I have the impression that they don’t want to use a JAMMA harness as they can be pretty bulky. I have tested my TC4 JVS I/O pcb and it works and boots up the 246 fine and I use my controllers for controls lol!

... wouldn't OpenJVS on a Pi technically work then?! and be smaller? :D I actually have a hat for that and haven't tried it yet :(

I see, interesting! So I'd be powering the 246 and this time crisis board separately? What sort of power supply would be used for the Time Crisis one?
I'll soon have a SUN PSU which I can power the 246 with, can it also power the board?
Alternatively, I'm realizing this is a lot of work for the silly reason of avoiding a JAMMA harness, haha.
Here's the power supply, 12V, 5V, 3.3V.

It requires a USB RS485 converter or the hat. that's it.

That’s very simple then lol!

You dont need a sun psu … any computer power supply will work.

And yes it will power both boards
Also to note: 3.3v isn’t needed for the 246 or 256. Only 12v, 5v, and ground. Also, a small 180 watt standard arcade power supply and a computer PSU with the same wattage won’t power the system up efficiently as they are power hungry systems, especially on the 5v rail! A 200watt PSU will absolutely work, while I wouldn’t recommend a computer PSU, some people have had success. I would recommend one with an adjustable 5v pot though. Namco did use very slim power supplies and I here’s how they look. Have a look! 👀
