Options for VGA to HDMI with low lag?

Hiya folks!

Like the title says, I need some options for VGA to HDMI, and need as little lag as possible.

RetroRGB recommended this little guy but I find it a bit suspect.

Mcbazel products keep coming up, but so far I've not seen any reviews with descriptions, just "4 stars" or whatever. Anyone have any experience with this board?

Any other routes I out to look at?

There's a range! Depends on your budget and the features. Is it for arcade games or gaming consoles?

The board you've shown looks like it may have similar components to the Gonbes GBS-8200. If so, it does "scaling" as well as conversion. The original Gonbes GBS-8200 (or modified GBS Control versions) generally would have a cheap HDMI adapter like the one you've shown from RetroRGB, and performed pretty well for arcade games. But there is risk around inconsistency in the components used in different batches, which Bob himself points out.

If you can spend a little more, you may consider a retro gaming scaler, unlike the RetroRGB one these ensure the output resolution is a good fit for your display. This is what I'd usually use, when plugging into a TV or digital monitor. The Retrotink products have a good range depending on your budget, such as the 2X Pro, 5X Pro, and 4K (out of stock until next month). There is also the OSSC and OSSC Pro (out of stock until August).

Edit: Actually I see VGA won't do for the 2X / 5X. SO you'd consider the OSSC in that case.
 
For use case,, I'll be using it to display output from a Namco System 246 on modern gaming monitors.

For budget, I'd prefer it not be the most expensive component in my setup, so let's say a soft cap of $150.

Who's got the goods in that case?
 
I'd say the OSSC, which I linked. Here's an old thread where someone is using the OSSC with their System 246. But the GBS Control (which is probably basically what you linked) is also worth a try if you want to save some money and see if it's good enough. Here's another thread with people pretty much saying the same thing.

I'd go with the OSSC over the GBS-C

GBS-C has known issues setting up at times

If the System 246 output resolution works well with the OSSC then you should be good playing on modern displays
The scaling with the OSSC is pretty much lagless too

When it comes to scalers there are a ton of options available with pretty much lagless scaling
The OSSC is really affordable and performs extremely well still if your running up 1080p monitors

You were looking for a VGA input and HDMI output and the OSSC has that compared to some of the other scalers

Any displays above 1080p into the 4k
Consider the OSSC Pro or the RT4K

Also consider the amount of lag your monitor produces
Most modern gaming monitors measure about 9-12ms which is a fraction of a frame
 
I can live with lower resolution but, but as a former pro gamer, anything over 2 frames total will not do. The monitor has 10ms input lag, so I've only got about 20 more to spare. :)

I'm no pro gamer but I'm pretty sensitive to input lag as well
That's why when I get a chance I'll play on a CRT and avoid using any controller converters despite the fact that a lot of converters and modern monitors have less than a frame of lag lol

I actually use the OSSC for my videos, I’m actually pretty happy with the results
