What's new

Today I worked on lots o’ cabs! (The CRT porn thread)

Tubeswap time!
Finding a proper 68 cm tube in Norway is next to impossible, so I was intrigued when this badboy popped up on Norwegian Craigslist a couple of months ago.

A Radionette RN29H30T.
Radionette is a Norwegian/ Swedish brand known for making radios in the 50’s/60’s, but they also made some OK TV’s in the middle of the 90’s. I actually had the same model when I was a teenager, so thought that was fun.

I took a chance on this due to the 29 in the model number and was pleasantly surprised that it actually had a 68cm tube inside. Not the best tube…. But still better than a soon to be dead Tosh-tube.

Now it was time to do some major surgery.
I had a backup Tosh tube in the basement with crazy burn in from 3rd strike, Dungeons and Dragons + lots of other games I couldn’t identify, but it had the proper cage and most importantly… A MS9 yoke.

IMG_2724.jpeg

I have never done a complete tubeswap before, but after just 4 screws, the cage was loose.
IMG_2725.jpeg

Dismantling the Radionette TV was also easy. Tubes are fucking heavy, but all in all smooth sailing.
IMG_2730.jpeg

Lots of nice spare parts to salvage from the chassis and some pretty nice shielded speakers that will most likely be used in my cocktail table (Best kitchen table ever 😁)

LG tube from Radionette TV installed in Tosh-cage. Was a perfect fit!

Removed the convergence rings and the yoke. Came off without much fuzz.

IMG_2739.jpeg

And installed the MS9 yoke using the original spacers as a temporary template. I kept the original convergence rings, since they felt a million time more sturdy than the MS9 rings I had as a backup.

Hooked up a spare MS9 chassis and was ready to test my work.
IMG_2740.jpeg

Looked like shit, but nothing exploded. Success 🤘🏻

IMG_2741.jpeg

Time to calibrate that yoke for some hopefully decent results. A big ass mirror is a must!
Bald and beautiful BuddyC as a bonus 🥳
IMG_2743.jpeg

After many hours of fucking micro adjustments, second guessing myself, OSD levels of calibration ,creative cursing and being dangerously close to electrocuting myself and the wife…. We have some pretty pleasant results

IMG_2744.jpeg

Not perfect, but pretty ok for a first time tube swap (Pats himself on the back)

Good result! Not sure if it's best to keep the rings that go with the yoke or the rings that go with the crt for the best outcome. I can't remember the last time I saw a 29" 4:3 TV come up for sale local to me, I could do with a 29" pureflat of some description to replace the Hitachi CRT I accidentally necked in my storage unit a few years ago!

Damn time flies fast! Time for update!
My New Astro City Tosh tube still works, but a dim picture is a good sign that the tube is old and tired.
Luckily, a new suitable donor TV popped up on Norwegian craigslist right in my neighborhood.
This time it was a newer model Radionette. RN29H36T. Estimated production date around 2000-2001. TV had been in storage for about 15 years, so the last owner didn’t use it much.

LG Philips A68QBC230X tube. Actually found yoke specs on AO wiki. Interesting indeed!

Tube was super clean, so I decided to hook up my trusty B&K rejuvenator to test emissions.
IMG_4852.jpeg

Wow! Epic levels of emissions! Probably has a good 30+ years of life left and no need for any form of calibration or clean/balance. Tube is fucking perfect and in excellent health! Party!

IMG_4855.jpeg

This will be a fine donor, so time to fit a MS9 yoke and have “fun” with base setup and adjusting dynamic convergence….

MS9 yoke fitted and ready for testing.

Cat helping with moral support
IMG_4882.jpeg

Hooked up a spare MS9 chassis and ready for testing and calibration. Dead Hitachi VCR used as impromptu riser 😁

Works! Looks like shit, but works!

First on the menu was addressing purity.
Good guidance here if you’re curious to try it ourselves.

Pretty horrible

Better
IMG_4888.jpeg

Coolio!
IMG_4890.jpeg

Time to do some yoke wrestling!
IMG_4891.jpeg

I adjusted the center convergence with the rings first as a baseline.
IMG_4892.jpeg

Then dynamic convergence… Needs some work….
IMG_4893.jpeg

Better….

IMG_4896.jpeg

Sexytime!

IMG_4899.jpeg

Pretty decent geometry and convergence if I may say so myself. Still needs some fine adjustments and final calibrations , but a ok baseline.

After fucking around a couple of hours and second guessing myself for the 100000 time, I got some pretty good results. Yoke setup and dynamic convergence sucks…

This tube is ready to be used in my NAC! Let the surgery begin!

1. Remove heavy as fuck tube from original enclosure.
IMG_4914.jpeg

2. Take a pic of tubes together…just for fun…
IMG_4915.jpeg

3. Remove cage from Tosh tube and fit on new tube. Looking good!
IMG_4917.jpeg

Final calibration in progress!
Old tube had some issues with the green gun….
IMG_4918.jpeg

IMG_4919.jpeg

All in all pretty happy with my new tube. Not as sharp as a Toshiba tube and not as defined scan lines, but vivid colors and excellent brightness + super stable image = great success and a happy Buddyc🤘🏻

If

If this fits well in @BuddyC NAC doesn’t that mean it won’t fit in the Blast? The curvature is too different.
Fits well means that I can fit the brezel on without no issues. There is still a small gap on the top and bottom (about 5 mm-ish) because of the difference in tube curvature, but this will be fixable.
As long as the brezel isn’t under any form of tension due to curvature, I’m happy. Lightbleed from the marquee is fixable with some foam strips etc.
