What's new
what the hell was that soldered with, a $15 ebay 900-series hakko-clone station?

I was realy interested on this, but seems people do not like to share stuff when there's money behind.
The fact is that even if you know how, will you be able to?
I was making traslated SNES repros some years ago and i did that as a real job for 2 years straight. Anyone can find how to do that, but very few are able (and had all the tools needed), till fuc***g chinese came up with that on aliexpress and made me quit pretty fast.
Point is that even if you share some it does not mean that anyone can do that, stuff must be kept secret, like we are all immortals and we can keep it forever. Bullshit.

So i just did the only way, buy me one.
And when i will receive it, i will tear that down and see how it works. I might even carefully share it here.

This is what my poor, now-dead, Cyvern cart looks like from him... And my Cave PGM carts...

So i just did the only way, buy me one.

This may or may not have been my reasoning for purchase as well. I just question my ability to remove the surface-mount chips for dumping, then replace them. But I'm practicing on other things when I have the time, and when I get good at it, I'll get around to them.

So, my cart came in today.
looks made just like yours, with those cool soldering skills. I'm not the best but these are realy shitty :D

first thing to do was to dump the 27c322 4mb prom

Bf4bZiY.jpg

I cleaned up the labels on the 44sop proms and removed them, among with glue, wires, resistors and all that stuff.
The guy used 2 diodes to knock down the voltage to 3V using 2x4007 that pull down 1V each (5V - 2x1V = 3V). He coulded use a simply 47K resistor to pull it down at 3,3V (this prom can eat 3.6V at max)

and i have cleaned at best i could the pads with my iron vacuum (on the left, right side still be done in this picture). There were TONS of solder and burnt flux residue

When i pulled out the proms i noticed that solder was that much to literally melt some pins, on the VCC side they were so full of them that legs came off easely.

I already had this problems by repairing corroded pins on pcb's so i know at least how to get them alive again, even if the pins are complitely off.

So i have taked my dremel and started scrubbing till the pin was at least solderable, since the core of the ic is in the middle it won't harm it if done gently

i geneally make good looking works when i get my hands on things but this was more fixing a bad work since the beginning, you'll get what you'll get.

And then.. i was stuck. None of my programmer were capable of reading those 26L6420 sop44 proms.. i was pretty sure they do but in the end, they didn't.

I wasn't able to read them so i tried to at least read some data using various configurations and proms taken in the list i have (the bigger one was a 29f800...).

Fun things is that my programmer are capable of 64Mbit tsop48/56 proms, but not sop44. I was intended to adapt my board and try to read it as one of them but i didn't want to lose that much time wiring all sorts, i keept what i get because anyway it wasn't matter, i just wanted to know and compare some data with online roms to see if they match somewhere, and they infact do, i have compared the first prom with the modified Ikaruga_v3.bin made for netboot/cf, they do not mach exact since there's only few chunks of data, but the rom file is defetly that one.

At this point i must suppose the rom was splitted into 3X 8MB, and the naomi will read the whole thing, store it and than play it, much like the dimms on the net

I'm kind stuck at this point since i have no programmer capable of write/read those 26L6420 proms, and the ones i find compatible are freaking expensive (something like 500$/600$, that's insane).
I think i will have to modify some adaptors if i want to try make my own in the future.

I will share the 27c322 Dump to AP users by pm if they requested me.

I will put again back the proms and solder them so i can use the game again wich i payed for, i have partially found how it works so i do not need them anymore to be read.

My game still doesn't run properly. Even after being reflowed by Mitsu. I put it in and I play through the first level and it eventually just freezes up. Sad days. If I had known someone was gonna order one, I would have just traded mine for another Naomi game since this one sucks :D

If you are sure about the soldering it may just be a prom that is gone bad.. if you exeed in hotting them you can easely broke them.
Luckly for me, still as the works here were pretty messy, is still working like before, just beated up a little bit more.

I will try to figure out an adapter for those proms, i have some virtua strikers lying around just waiting for that to happen.
Will also be cool if darksoft could take a look at the bios i have dumped and give us his thoughts.. :)

Awesome work @TheDeath. I have a quite worthless Ninja Assault game that I am holding onto for the surgery if this is ever figured out. Only want one game to be on cart and that is CvS2. The other games, I am comfortable with netbooting them.

If you have a cart made (or make your own) DO get/use the new/final revision of the game just discovered this year.

I've got a multicart with MvC2 and CvS2, but unfortunately it's the unpatched MvC2 (because it wasn't released at the time of programming) and the first revision of CvS2 (because the other had not been discovered/dumped yet).

Out of interest what carts is he modding? The M4 ones or some others?

Made a little step further this morning.
I needed to have the "somehow" adaptor for those 26L6420 i have ordered and waiting for delivery.
The only thing i could do using what i have here at moment was converting a TSOP48 Board to SOP44, using the Spansion S29GL064 (64Mbit), wich was the only 8MB prom that my programmer could handle.
I've took pinout for both and make cross reference

e4omkgO.jpg

after 1 hour or so, i had my homemaded adapter.

e1vV70R.jpg

Since there was 2 VERSIONS of this 29GL064 (SIX MODELS...lol) i've made a mistake following the one i didn't have, luckly it was just 4 pins that do not match from a model to another (mostly highest adress pins like A20 A21) and i have patched it up.
I have put /BYTE on High (VCC) to enable word mode in 8-Bits (otherwise it woulded be read like a 16Bit prom and only give you 4MB of data instead of 8MB)

After the patching i've took my Virtua Striker 2000 and removed the prom1 at IC1 (8MB rom)

smX1SMS.jpg

I also forgot about power, because even if the proms on the cart are same pins as 26L6420 they are powered by 5V and not 3V like my programmer (i shoulded remember it from the teardown of the cart, but hey, it's been a hot week here in italy, the hottest we had in almost 100Years).
I had to temporary crank up the power if i wanted to properly read the original proms.

wq8gZio.jpg

then i gave it to my programmer be tasted like

NzOrGYN.jpg

and the dump compared to the mame file was 100% identical

hvnech2.jpg

So as now, i might be able to read again proms from the conversion and write some 26L6420.

The only issue is that.. i have fixed already the ikaruga cart, and i'm afraid to remove another time the proms, i don't think they wont last this time.

Thanks guys, i appreciate that!

Let me propose this: how about a fund in order me to buy an atomiswave cart from that guy, so after figure this out (almost close), we can discover how atomis games he made to work on the cart?
i'll put 25$ in my side of course.
Or if some of you having that cart is willing to "rent" me his cart in order to copy that?

I'll try to remove again proms from ikaruga taking some precautions, i will cover the proms somehow in order to only heat pins properly, i'm confident to have a good result.
I will share dumps of course ;)

I am in for $25 bud. Would be a boon for the community if you can figure it out. Like you said earlier, we don't live forever. This is the Net, we share.
