Night Warriors 2, Vampire Savior 2 and Street Fighter Alpha 3 Upper are now available in English. Patches are available here. You'll need the original roms or disc images to use the provided patches. IPS and MRA files are provided for MAME/MiSTer.

Some background: I've long been a fan of Capcom's 90s games. I've been persistently annoyed that Capcom hasn't bothered to translate these games, despite releasing them over the years in various collections. The goal of these is to be as faithful to both the Japanese text while also honoring terminology Capcom used in its English language releases. In doing this, I discovered that Capcom was actually quite sloppy with its other translations, dropping strings or changing meaning (not surprising for the time period).

Capcom must have been contemplating an English language release, as this title screen was embedded within the Japanese release.

What's changed

  • Arcade-native Night Warriors 2 title screen, built from the ROM's unused Western title path
  • USA region presentation (warning screen and region byte)
  • Western character names on character select, route map labels, and the fight HUD: Zabel → L.Raptor, Gallon → J.Talbain, Lei-Lei → Hsien-Ko, Phobos → Huitzil, Aulbath → Rikuo
  • English route/stage titles
  • All 225 post-fight quotes in English
  • All boss dialog and every character ending translated (44 records, verified on natural routes)
  • English staff roll under the Night Warriors 2 name

What's changed

  • USA region presentation
  • Western character names on character select, route map, and fight HUD: Bulleta → Baby Bonnie Hood, Zabel → L.Raptor, Lei-Lei → Hsien-Ko, Phobos → Huitzil
  • All 241 post-fight quotes in English (192 official arcade records reused verbatim, 48 VS2-only records newly translated)
  • All 29 ending pages and both 4-page Jedah final-boss dialogs translated and relocated into verified free ROM space
  • Route stage names and option labels verified byte-identical to the official U.S. arcade records

Capcom recently released this title in Capcom Fighting Collection 2. In investigating the GD-ROM image, I discovered that it has region support for USA and Euro, but was region restricted as part of the disc image. Simply by patching the image, the disc can work in all regions. Depending on your BIOS region, you'll see a localized experience. I found people discussing this a bit elsewhere online after I made my discovery, but hopefully the patch will help others.

What's changed

  • NAOMI header region mask: Japan → Japan + USA + Export (one byte in the game header, eight encrypted bytes on disc)
  • Nothing else — this is a region unlock only; it does not translate or otherwise modify the game

Feedback and Suggestions
I've marked both CPS2 translations as release candidates, so please let me know if you hit any issues or have any suggestions. I've got a few other things I'm working on - hopefully I'll have more to share soon.

Thanks,
Steve

Both Darkstalkers translations are updated to rc2.

  • The English now uses Capcom's official Darkstalkers 3 wording wherever it was accurate to the Japanese, and the rest has been refined to match Capcom's style. A lot of these characters had official English lines that I'd rendered differently, and Capcom's read better.
  • Capcom's hidden name art spelled Lord Raptor "L.Rapter". It now reads L.Raptor everywhere it appears.
  • Oboro Bishamon's win now plays his own victory theme instead of a stage theme, and his silent win quote shows as a clean row of dots instead of stray marks.
  • Both sets now change four graphics ROMs for the name art, so rebuild them with the rc2 kits.

Capcom's hidden name art spelled him "L.Rapter". It now reads L.Raptor everywhere it appears.

On MiSTer, the MRAs are renamed and reorganized across all my projects. They're all Title (Region) [Tag] now, they live under _Arcade/_Arcade Patches/_Translations/, and their headers carry proper region, platform and category fields so Arcade Organizer sorts them. Delete the MRAs your earlier install left on the card, or you'll have duplicates.

Night Warriors 2 · Vampire Savior 2

Since this thread I've done a fair amount more, mostly CPS-2: enhanced versions of Super Turbo and Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter, English restorations of MSHvSF and Street Fighter Zero 2 Alpha, and Street Fighter Alpha 2 Gold rebuilt as a real CPS-2 game. It's all in a new projects thread, which is where I'll be posting new releases from now on.
