CBOX/JAMMA Box Questions

I know this is an old thread but for the sake of anyone who's looking into purchasing a supergun in 2026 I'd like to add my own experience.

The "USB Supergun CBOX v4" aka the blue box seen earlier in the thread was my first supergun, in terms of functionality I think it's a very good buy. The built in USB ports, native SCART and S-VIDEO output as well as the separated JAMMA edge connector give it a leg up over the competition and it's more available for purchase than other pre-made options. The ability to easily remap buttons through the JAMMA edge connector is also incredibly convenient in BYOC situations such as FGC locals.

For the longest time however, the visuals had suffered from ground loop shenanigans and the usual anti-ground loop solutions didn't work. It turns out it was the PSU I had bought for it was causing it. After a few dice rolls with other generic PSUs with varying results, I discovered that Mean Well actually makes a consumer-grade 12v PSU that works with it, the GST90A12-P1M. I ordered one from Digikey and I can happily say that my ground loop issues are no more. So either the CBOX v4 is very picky about PSUs, or most modern 12v PSUs simply aren't up to snuff.

One flaw worth noting is the H-Pos and V-Pos dials are incredibly sensitive and don't like to stay in place, causing the screen to jitter if you toggle the SYNC button to enable them. Another is the voltage potentiometer on the JAMMA edge connector (Aparantly this is a newer addition, older CBOX v4s don't have this feature), the plastic on the screw dial is incredibly soft and easy to strip even with plastic tools. I wish they had used a more traditional metal dial with the little grooves to attach your own knob. Thankfully I haven't needed to adjust it too much!

Overall I think this is a perfectly fine supergun to start with if you're new to arcade hardware collecting. Between this, the Axunworks supergun mini and the HAS v5, the three superguns I own, I much prefer the HAS because function-wise it's a better product in nearly every way, but the CBOX v4's simplicity and ease of use make it more convenient in a lot of situations, especially when playing with others who may not know about the complexities that come with playing arcade games at home. Perhaps I got lucky and recieved one of the few CBOX v4s with only minor issues, but right now I'm pretty happy with it and I'll continue to use it for events and playing games outside of my dedicated cab.

The H and V position actually slowly drifts over the course of 10-15 minutes while the unit warms up, I think this is the cause of the vertical jitter you see. It stabilizes after a while.

I have the older version of the CBOX the one with the SEGA Saturn ports and the sync jitter keeps occurring every circa every 20-30 minutes. .
My friend owns one of these for his consoles and it suffers from the exact same issue, it's probably this device that has been incorporated in the CBOX through later revisions.
