Darksoft CPS-1 Multi: Preview / Sneak Peek / Information - FINALLY!

I bought two boards for this and both are 10mhz cpu. My concern is once I swap that crystal to 12mhz the custom will run hotter. Not like these things are built like tanks. I've heard of it getting warm to the touch. I don't wanna shorten the life of my board. My only hope is hearing how these boards can handle the 12mhz uptick fine. Either way i will be looking into heatsinks and fan mods in cases to alleviate this. Unless i stumble on a 12mhz dash board in the interim.

There's a thread around here somewhere where someone identified a good heatsync for the A01 custom. But I don't believe there is any difference in the customs between the 10MHz and 12MHz boards.

There isn't. The difference as it was already explained is the Main CPU 68000. If you want to convert your PCB, you can change both the quartz and the 68000 processor for one that says P12 instead of P10.

I think the best is to have 2 A Boards one for each. Or just a double quartz solution like @Mitsurugi-w was planning.

i did the 12mhz swap on my mercs board in the name of the multiz. it does run warm. it dropped my voltage .2v and was runing warm to the touch on the bottom of the board after 1/2 hour or so in attract mode. i wired a noctua fan for the dreamcast mod and fixed it with a ziptie to the punched hole of my C board. i ran a test yesterday of 1/2 hour of attract mode and a full play thru, plus another half hour of attract mode with the little fan mod and a full 5v... she was cold as the rockies. when someone does make a case for the multi, having a slot for a fan might be a nice thing to have.

here's the board with the 12mHz crystal installed and the 10mHz one i removed

So, if you have a 10Mhz one and overclock it to 12Mhz it will run warmer and you risk some glitches (but may not even glitch at all). If you underclock it to 10Mhz it will run exactly like a non dash board. So if anyone want to do a dual clock thing they should be able to, no problem.

Heatsinks are a waste of time on chips that barely get warm to the touch. And the CPS1Q case has a fan only because it is closed and may retain heat.

I've installed heatsinks on the the A01 custom on all my CPS1 boards, partly because I have had them get hot to the touch and partly because of the well-known poor track record on the reliability of these customs. Maybe the heatsink won't help the longevity, but it certainly won't hurt either.

I haven't installed a heatsink on the 68000 CPU since they're common and cheap. :P

Exactly what Leo said. There are versions of the processor that work at 12Mhz. If you overclock a 10Mhz CPU to work as 12Mhz you may experience issues.

Given there'll be some nice cases for this, I'll most likely end up with two setups, just like my other Capcom Multi's. Thankfully the donor boards are affordable still :)

Would you like your processor well done or Medium Rare sir?! ;)

At the risk of derailing this conversation with an unhelpful subjective question....

What sound setup are you using and how does it go with C&D?

Have the 50 in 1 CPS1 multi. Has had a lot of use and don't regret it for a second but lots of hacked roms and of particular annoyance C&D sounds like it's being played through a 1980s PC speaker from the other side of the room. Wasn't super excited until you mentioned the qsound chip. Curious if this nails the original feel?

The Multi includes the Qsound chips found in original CPS1.5 (D-board) games.
That 50-in-1 China made bullshit had to cut all the original Qsound because it lacks the (D-board) hardware.

CPS1 = ADPCM
CPS1.5 = QSound
CPS2 = Qsound
