Hi, I recorded the process of making this patch (link) if you want to learn how I did it.
Otherwise the game does not have a free-play option, but if you run this patch you can then use the hardware dip #3 to enable/disable freeplay.
The game will boot up with 9 credits, and maintain the credit count regardless of continues etc.
