I got a Fixeight PCB off YAJ that was shown as fully working. When I received it, it only boots to garbage or a black screen: That image moves for a bit then freezes. Volume pot gives feedback during this but no sound/credit. Test button does nothing. This is tested on 2 different cabs. I noticed the ceramic custom HK-1000 had a crack but from what I've seen this doesn't stop the game from booting.

Sent the game to a trusted repairer (Ken @ Irepairsega) and he said the game was working fine on his bench. Replaced the HK-1000 as nothing else seemed to be wrong and was tested fully working for him (before and after the custom was replaced).

Received the game back and I'm still getting the same stuck/no boot symptoms on 2 different cabs, adjusted voltages etc. The only common link is both cabs are MS9 monitors but that shouldn't cause a boot issue. Other PCBs of the same architecture work fine on these cabs (V-V, Batsugun). Any ideas for this weird behavior?

Might be the reset circuit. What happens when you power the cab off then on again quickly?

It might be sensitive to your cabs' PSUs, if it's working on Ken's bench.

Doing that alternates the 2 boot states - rolling garbage to frozen garbage - to solid black screen and vice versa.

I've tried voltages from about 4.65 to 5.15, not 0.01 specific voltages but many within those ranges.

I can vouch it worked fine on Ken's bench. I went by when it was there. Basically from what I saw the ceramic was cracked in an area and the game would boot, but the inputs were out of control, so the ceramic was replaced with a reproed one. After that, it booted fine and he played through a level.

A few things to check/do: Push down on the Quad Flat Pack chip a little and see if there's any difference. If both of your cabinets are the same model, try it at a Friend's house or a supergun.

Try removing and reinserting the socketed ROMs.
Just tried again. Dumped them this time and confirmed good on ROMIdent, sockets look ok too. The PCB looks mint aesthetically. Never seen weird behavior like this on a PCB before on these cabs, but what could it be that they run many other PCBs of different systems with no issue and just this single PCB doesnt want to boot?

Weird things happen on arcade cabinets.... some times boards work in some cabinets, but not others due to various reasons.

Sorry to hear your game still isn't working with my HK-1000 module !
Is your other cabinet.. also an Impress ? If so I would side with Fox that some games don't work on some cabs.. like (Korean) M92 games won't boot on my Blast city for example.

Thanks, the module looks great on it 😁 The other cab is a NAC with a different PSU. I guess I will have to pass this PCB on due to incompatibility once it's confirmed working in superguns.

Ah it should def work on the NAC actually.. that is weird. You can try with a third power source and if it's still defective, then probably needs a reflow somewhere with a cold solder joint on a pin or two.

Ken did check the legs on the 3 QFPs when he had it. I just double checked them under a microscope and they looked ok. I'll reflow them as it can't hurt at this point.

A friend mentioned he had a Batsugun with a cold solder joint on a crystal oscillator and wouldn't boot and pushing on it made it boot.
I've been to Ken's many times and he tests everything flat on his workbench but not hung sideways vertically, so maybe that is the issue.

Problem is even if it runs on a supergun, it doesn't run on a stock NAC. I reflowed the customs but unfortunately no change in boot behavior.

I'll take a look and give this a try!
