Golden Axe Port - Dev log

Hey @h0ffman excellent port again and thanks a lot and whole team. I just saved on the Neo Geo CD.

2 things happen with me and I think is my console because I never updated the unibios.

- during continue, not able to select different characters.
- player 2 not playable just start is working. None the other buttons or direction is working.

Graphic and sound perfect
Just a little lagging when you finish the final boss and the queen and the king are being pulling down.

The rest perfectly

I don't think you can change characters when you continue in Golden Axe.

If you can, I will be surprised that I never noticed this in hundreds of sessions.

Hoffman, Have you experimented with Generative AI (like Anthropic Claude 3.5 Sonnet) tools to aid in the process?
 
Awesome work, I've made a copy to myself today. The MVS always lacked a good beat'em up.
 
Thank you for this hoffman I had a BLAST playing the Sega 16 version of Golden Axe on the Neo Geo. I had only played the genesis port previously and it was really cool to see all the features that port was missing. It also makes me laugh about the 90s moms losing their shit about Mortal Kombat.... it wasn't the only game with blood... maybe it was the only game that made it home with blood!
 
^^^ Exactly, and since GA is a hack and slash, the NG has NO good beat'em ups!

Now, like music, I'm OK arguing genre classifications, like are hack and slash's a sub-genre of beat'em ups? OK, maybe...
 
Yeah, I got my copy this weekend, putting it through its paces. It's good so far!

Back on track for this thread, @h0ffman once again, well done. This is amazing. GA is one of my favorites and it's been great playing on the NG. Thank you!

Are there any updates to this or Shinobi planned or is it on to the next thing for you now?
 
I think that with all the knowledge that @h0ffman has acquired on this specific type of port, it would be great if he could polish the tools that he has probably made to make other system16 ports easier and relatively fast. I remark the word relatively. I know to a certain extent what is involved in this.
Dynamite Dux or Altered Beast would be great to see converted.

It has a soft spot in my heart as well, but man, it's not a good one!

Dynamite Dux would be interesting though.

I still think Fantasy Zone 2 from the S16c board would be the most interesting b/c of the expanded RAM situation.

Please stop spreading misinformation that Altered Beast would NOT be the best next game for @h0ffman to work on.

We need to actively encourage the proliferation of Altered Beast onto as many platforms as possible.

I'm afraid that all this pressure will discourage programmers.
some people complain about non-existent problems, others on minor problems like flash carts.
remember that this is a great job and should be appreciated as a gift.
I've heard way too many people talking about Hoffman's next game. we are free to dream, but be respectful. <3
 
I think everyone is super thankful to @h0ffman for his outstanding work and we can only thank him. As I've been there too, the main thing IMO that discourages people making this kind of work is when people start complaining and pushing for fixes. Praising and wishing in a polite manner is IMO a good thing.
