Current version: rc1 (November 5, 2026)

Hyper Street Fighter II: The Anniversary Edition brings together the classic versions of each fighter from the Street Fighter II series. This restoration lets you play the Japanese game in English, with Western fighter names and the official US regional move voices.

Win quotes, full endings, illustrated Continue tips and all 28 Start messages are in English. Japan's speed, CPU difficulty, damage and stun rules are preserved, along with its factory settings.

What's in it

  • Japanese 040202 gameplay and classic fighter versions.
  • Western fighter names and official US regional move voices.
  • English win quotes, full endings and illustrated Continue tips.
  • All 28 Start-message choices in English. The project page explains the solo, two-player and result-screen messages.
  • Stage and portrait artwork repairs, black backgrounds in affected ending and Ryu intro scenes, and a clearer ending-choice menu.
  • Native Free Play in the operator menu, with saved settings and no-coin starts.

Cammy's win quotes in English.

Japanese gameplay, English presentation

In Free Select, the original US release runs one speed step faster than Japan at the same Turbo label. This restoration keeps the Japanese speeds. Its factory defaults are fixed Turbo 2 and one coin per credit; the original US defaults are Free Select and two coins per credit.

New in rc1

First public release.

Getting it running

  • You need your own dump of Hyper Street Fighter II: The Anniversary Edition (Japan 040202), the MAME set hsf2j, as a .zip, a .7z or a folder. Merged, split and complete sets work. No game data is hosted.
  • The IPS kit builds HBMAME and FBNeo outputs. Use emulator builds that include the hsf2re set.
  • On MiSTer, use the stock Japanese romset and the MRA kit with Jotego's jtcps2 core. It appears under _Arcade/_Arcade Patches/_Restorations. Split sets also need qsound.zip.
Full instructions are on the project page.

This is a release candidate. Bug reports and suggestions are welcome right here. Tell me which fighter, version and platform you ran, what you did and what you saw.
