Current version: rc6 (November 7, 2026)

Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter kept a lot from you. Outside Japan there was no Norimaro. Nowhere could you play as Cyber-Akuma or Apocalypse, or put the same fighter on a team twice. The console ports later added extra colors and more speeds, but only at home.

EX gives the arcade game all of it. The other fighters retain their original moves, damage, hitboxes and computer behavior.

What's in it

  • Norimaro in both builds, with his own ending, restored nosebleed attack and unused victory animation against Chun-Li, Sakura and Dark Sakura.
  • Cyber-Akuma and Apocalypse are playable, each with a spot on the select screen. Their special moves work on the Easy control setting too.
  • Hidden versions of every fighter with a two-second Start hold, no codes needed, though the old codes still work.
  • Any team, including the same fighter twice in a different color. Only one Apocalypse is allowed per match, so his stage stays intact.
  • A new English translation from the Japanese: sixteen win quotes per fighter instead of eight, and all seventeen standard endings, plus Mech-Zangief's, Shadow's and Dark Sakura's.
  • Two extra colors per fighter from the Saturn version. They carry through portraits, intros, special moves and hypers, and stay with your team for the whole arcade run.
  • U.S. Agent, Mephisto and Shadow get their names in the fight HUD, which the original game leaves blank.
  • M. Bison's Hyper Combo is Knee Press Nightmare in every region, the name Capcom has used since Alpha 3.
  • Console mode. A title menu with Arcade, Versus, Training and Options, and a pause menu in every fight (Coin, or hold Start). Versus is against a friend or the computer, with a stage choice, then Rematch or Change Characters with the wins kept. Training sets the computer's action and guard, both gauges, speed and stage. Options cover difficulty, speed, damage, sound and a time limit of 25, 50, 75 or 99 seconds, or none.
  • Eight game speeds instead of three, and Free Play in both the USA and Japan builds.
MiSTer starts in Console mode. MAME and HBMAME start in Arcade mode. GAME MODE on the service menu's EX page switches between them.

  • Hold Start on any fighter for two seconds and their hidden version appears before you pick.
  • Cyber-Akuma and Apocalypse are on the select screen, with no hold needed.
  • Pick your fighter with HP or HK for the two Saturn colors.
  • Norimaro's nosebleed attack: back, down, down-back plus an attack button or Start. It has seven thought-image variations.

New in rc6

  • Fixes a Console mode bug that could bring defeated Hulk back on screen or create an extra Cyber-Akuma, and could also crash the game.
  • Fixes two game-speed errors that could crash the game or corrupt memory at the original speed settings.
  • Restores Norimaro’s nosebleed attack, with seven thought-image variations, and his unused victory animation against Chun-Li, Sakura and Dark Sakura.
  • Restores the Mech-Gouki name in the Japanese build on character select, versus screens and his ending.
  • Restores Apocalypse’s original skin colors in his small select-screen portrait.
  • Console mode skips the FBI and EPA notice screens.
Both builds have new checksums, so rebuild them with the rc6 kit. Earlier versions are listed on the changelog.

Getting it running

  • You need your own Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter (Japan 970707) set, mshvsfj, merged, split or non-merged, as a .zip, a .7z or a folder. No game data is hosted.
  • The IPS kit builds both the USA and Japan versions from it. They run in MAME and HBMAME and on MiSTer.
  • On MiSTer, the MRA kit adds both builds under _Arcade/_Arcade Patches/_Enhanced Versions.
  • MAME reports checksum warnings for the patched files. That's expected, and the game plays normally.
Full instructions are on the project page.

Thanks to RQ87's Norimaro inventory, which mapped what the export versions changed. himanito's earlier Unlocked MRAs in Arcade Offset covered some of this ground. EX is an independent implementation.

This is a release candidate. Bug reports and suggestions are welcome right here. Tell me which build you ran and what you saw.

Oh man, this takes me back! Great work, looking forward to trying it out.

rc4 is out. The HP and HK colors now stay on through intros, special moves and hypers, instead of switching to the Kick colors. A minor improvement: on the first stage, your team is back on screen for the opponent reveal. Both builds have new checksums, so rebuild them with the rc4 kit. The first post is updated.

Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter EX rc5 is out.

Console mode gives the game a home-style title menu with Arcade, Versus, Training and Options, and a pause menu in every fight.

  • Versus against a friend or the computer, with a stage choice, then Rematch or Change Characters with the wins kept.
  • Training with the computer's action and guard, both gauges, speed and stage.
  • Options for difficulty, speed, damage, sound and a time limit of 25, 50, 75 or 99 seconds, or none.
  • Cyber-Akuma and Apocalypse now have their own spots on the select screen, and Versus names use the arcade's own lettering.

MiSTer starts in Console mode. MAME and HBMAME start in Arcade mode; GAME MODE on the service menu's EX page switches between them.

Both builds have new checksums, so rebuild them with the rc5 kit, or update the MiSTer MRAs. The first post is updated.

Rebuild each region you use with the RC6 kit, or update through ArcadePatches Builder, using your own Japanese mshvsfj arcade set. It runs in MAME and HBMAME and on MiSTer.

This is a release candidate. Thanks for the reports! Please include your region, game mode and steps to reproduce any problems.
