Metro VG420 Multi interest and development thread?

I have never seen a version other than the "VG460-(A)" If you know of one I'd love to see some pictures.
MAME claims Lady Killer / Moeyo Gonta! is VG460-B.
The PCB says VG460-(A) but the Layout seems to deviate from the board you are using for testing:

that looks completely different from my "VG460-(A)" board. I'm guessing it's a Korean PCB?

My Gonta is also labeled VG460-(A)

^All of them VG460-(A) and all look different than the on you posted.

I can tell you that the VG460-Multi I'm designing will NOT work on the board in your picture, since the EPROM layout would be incompatible.

Well why would it ever be that easy... 🙃
No Clue if it is Korean, the Game shouldn't be... but i have to check again first to be certain. Maybe Gonta and Lady Killer are just two different PCBs?

That game is a classic low quality Korean clone. The chips are Hyandai, the amp section has no heatsink.

Just to be clear, clone as in produced in korea because of the import ban and not clone as in Bootleg?

Unless someone else has a lady killer to compare it would appear bootleg to me.
I suspect rtw is correct that it's a Korean release. Many Korean releases used what looks like half way between a legit PCB and a bootleg. my understanding is that they were unofficially licensed but manufactured in Korea instead of Japan so they often have slightly different PCB layouts and used Korean parts and materials.

if you look at this it's using an imagetek VDP and the same PLD configuration as an original, that wouldn't be possible without inside knowledge from Metro.

the PangPom's PCB that Mageta found for me early in this thread is a Korean release of the VG420 board, though it's much closer to the original Japanese board and thankfully has the EPROMs in the exact same position so the multi works with it.

Korean Pang Poms:

Note the PCB color is different, some the trace routing is a bit different, it's missing the heat sync on the audio amp, it has bootleg looking labels, it uses korean bran RAM and logic chips etc.

exactly.

Consolation prize is I can tell you how to convert it to Sky Alert or Karate Tournament if you'd like.

That one is actually a european built one.

The korean ones are the larger board, as shown above.

Basically the koreans get the chips somehow (sometimes officially, sometimes from back streets or sometimes harvested from older original boards (turtles / outzone boots use 2nd hand chips... lots of stuff will of been lost to these games)

Thanks for the offer but luckily i found a Karate Tournament. It's actually the reason i got the Gonta/Ladykiller in the first place. The Karate Tournament was non working and i bought it for parts... didn't need it since the Karate Tournament basically required no work.

currently now I'm having some issues getting my test circuit on the VG460 to work, so as of right now there are no guarantees this will come to fruition.
I'll wait for your final outcome before getting the VG460 board as a donor or I'll get VG420 board instead if I find one.

Been playing around with a test unit @twistedsymphony sent over, and just wanted to post some pics! Hot off the test bench!

Everything is working great, and it’s very cool to see twisted apply all the crazy esoteric knowledge he’s been acquiring over the last few years. To produce a full multi like this you gotta do so much stuff — hardware reversing, PLD magic, pcb routing, rom patching etc!!

I'd recommend people still hunt for a VG420 board. I'm having issues with the address remapping on the VG460. So as of right now pangpoms and poitto are not working

I've decided to take a break from VG460 to focus on other projects until I have some fresh ideas.

VG420 boards should be arriving any day now and hopefully a after a quick verification build I can start shipping to people

We also have a Lady Killer (Gonta) on VG460-(B)

thanks for the picture!
usually with revisions like this it's just a bug fix in the traces or sometimes uses an alternate chip that needs a slight trace change

playing where's waldo against one of my VG460-(A) boards I'm not seeing any differences in the traces yet.

any chance you can get a high-res picture of the bottom?

Any chance either of you have dumped and confirmed the program ROM version on your boards?

No but i could give it a go.
Edit: Would i need to dump all eproms or would be one enough to make sure if it matches?

If i can purchase it , i can do the dump . If not , i will try with the owner to see if he can share them (Let me know witch ones to ask to be read and saved) . Or should i ask him : E8E , E1 , E2 , E3 ?

Just two two ROMs near the 8 and 9 silkscreen, those are the program ROMs

E2 and E3 are the program ROMs, if there's a difference that's where it will be.

it can't hurt checking the other ROMs but there's a high probably that they're the same.
