What's new

MiSTer FPGA

" CPS1/2 if and when implemented will not exceed 32mb."

Is there any news on that? I was not aware the CPS1/2 is/was on the works?

How about the NeoGeo? Has the sound been implemented on that core?

ElectronAsh has been working on the cps1 sound and someone I dont know on the video. ElectronAsh also has a lot of piled up projects like sh3/4 daughterboards for MiSTer etc, so I would think the CPS1/2 from that point of view is not a priority for him.

If you compile the latest commit on github sound is running say at 75%, however this is not an official beta release. furrtek said that there would be a big announcement soon. MiSTer's genesis core had terrible sound till Dec 2018 - jotego's core helped correcting it. furrtek is using jotego's JT40 core its just not 100% integrated yet.

Maybe we can find our way into the REAL Cave hardware... ;( ;( ;( <- tears of hope
He is trying to do a Naomi dev kit, there are people who suggested that a CAVE core with real processor would be the best on MiSTer. However, he is also one of the people (Edu Arana is the other) who is making a all in one (wifi, midi etc included) card for x68k. He has a lot on his plate so honestly its best to assume he might not finish a lot of projects he is taking on himself.

Sometimes it just takes someone starting something. Or coming up with the idea.

If he doesn't make it, maybe someone else will. As it sits I don't have a lot of use for a MiSTer outside of mucking about, but I'd be ordering one tomorrow if someone was even half thinking of making a CV1000 core.

Some updates recently/today

64MB and 128MB SDRAM addons are now supported - i just pre-ordered mine today
Neo Geo core released "officially" today! (it is now in the updater script)

Neo Geo core has now got many FPGA devs working together on it and i have to say it's pretty darn good. I've been playing for hours on it this morning and so far haven't found any glitches (on games that fit 32MB). furtek even decapped chips and used a microscope to figure out logic they were missing!

That is great news... does the NeoGeo cord support full sound now???

CPS2/CPS1 next please:)

It does appear to have full sound (i couldn't see any problems in my testing today) and i also couldn't find any graphical glitches

Someone put a short video up already here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eLSo40uCRbk

furtek has said now he has the decapping and microscope setup he plans to work on documenting the same for irem and capcom hardware :)

That's fantastic! Apart from using the Mister, getting full and accurate documentation of chips like the infamous CPS-A-01 would open the door to make modern replacements.

The only thing that is stopping me from getting an Altera DE10-nano to build a Mister is the need for USB controllers. I hope we see a daughter board to connect neogeo style controllers soon.

That just came out also take a look at this here https://misteraddons.com/product/blisster-usb-hub-low-latency-controller-interface/

It has a HDMI breakout cable thing (HDMI is purely a pin connector not for video) and there is a neogeo one. Don't drop cash on it yet though without some research because a lot of people are waiting for a different addon called the ll cool joy.

You also can now do 0 lag analogue video out without an additional IO board (signal is output on hdmi as analogue and you use an adaptor)

Hi,

I think I will give MiSTer FPGA a try, but I'm a bit lost.

So if I check the github and what is written in this thread, I think I need:
  • DE-10
  • I/O board 6.0 (so I can plug it to a CRT screen or an HDMI modern TV)
  • RTC board 1.3 (for Amiga)
  • SDRAM XSD board 2.4 (with 128MB for NeoGeo)
  • 7 ports USB-Hub 2.1 (for connecting easily keyboard, joypad... without power issue)
  • MiSTer LL Cool Joy (when it will be available)
Did I miss something ?

I can find DE-10 easily, but for all the daugter boards, I'm wondering where to find assembled ones in Europe ?

Last question: is it better to plug it directly to an HDMI screen, or is it better to plug it in an OSSC ?

Thanks

Connecting a VGA cable from the Mister I/O to an OSSC will give you superior scaling compared to the built in scaling on the MiSTer but you may have to tweak OSSC settings between different cores.

You've pretty much listed everything you'd need. I'd also pickup a raspberry pi PSU with inline on/off switch so you don't have to pull the cable to turn it off.

I have a few v5.5 I/O and 32Mbit SDRAM boards here which I could send through with your C2 Selector. Otherwise there's bound to be someone building these in Europe.

Thanks for your reply and thanks for your proposal, but I would prefer to start with the last revision boards.
Is atari-forum the best place to find them ?

The DE-10 and an SDRAM board are the bare essentials. There is one Micro USB port on the DE-10, so you can technically squeeze by without a USB hub if you're only plugging in one controller.

The MiSTer's HDMI scaler is now highly-optimized and is more-or-less on par with the OSSC, so you can plug the MiSTer directly into an HDMI screen with minimal scaling latency.

As for parts sources, this thread lists sellers in each region: http://www.atari-forum.com/viewtopic.php?f=117&t=33613
