On paper it seems to be the real deal:
- 1:1 console, sticks, pad
- HDMI + analogue RGB out
- running on a 68K and Z80 just as the original Neo Geo
- accepts original and new cartridges (wondering if it will run multicarts)
-Very reasonable pricing
Where's the catch? Seems almost too good to be true...
Been wondering this too. Between the choice to stay with DB15 instead of switching to USB, keeping analog out, the extremely well-selected launch game lineup, and forwards/backwards compatibility with original accessories, they've made basically every choice that
I would have made. All the information so far indicates that it's a device for sickos like us.
The potential sticking points aren't from something bad that we know, it's about vague things that could resolve in a non-optimal way. For example we know that they're using ASICs rather than FPGA or emulation, but we don't know the quality of the ASIC reproduction. It could be like a shitty Famiclone, or it could be a perfect recreation, or somewhere in-between. Without more detail, it's impossible to know.
Secondly they didn't give video output details beyond analog and HDMI. What analog output formats? What resolutions will HDMI support? Will there be a direct-out option on the HDMI for use with scalers? What about scanline filters?
Given that everything that they
have detailed is, IMO, the right choice, I am willing to give them the benefit of the doubt on what we
don't know.
