New NEO-GEO Aes will be released ?

Jotego just dropped a bunch more info, and indicated he's not under NDA for the technical details of the console. If anyone else gets the chance to interview him, here are the only remaining questions I can think of:

HDMI output
  • What resolutions are supported?
  • Is there an unscaled, direct video output?
  • How does it handle the difference between the analog refresh rate and 60Hz? Buffering, tearing, or off spec? Can you select?
  • What are the filter and scanline options?
  • What is the latency for the HDMI output?
  • Does the digital output portion have updateable firmware?
Dips/Options
  • What exactly do the physical dips on the bottom of the console do?
  • Did it license Unibios? Or separately implement Unibios features?
  • Can it run games in MVS mode?
  • How does the overclocking work?
Analog output
  • Has stereo been added to the DIN, or does it still require running a cable over to the headphone out?
  • Presumably runs at AES speed, but is there a way to set it to MVS speed?
Compatibility
  • Will homebrew/flashcarts/bootlegs work?
  • Furrtek says his fusion adapter works, but is that just for retail MVS carts?
I don't think Jotego worked on these parts, but it would also be great to know:

Controllers
  • The wireless controllers have a DB15 cable, but does that do a USB to DB15 conversion with latency, or directly wire?
  • Are they going to fix the color scheme of the buttons on the CD Pad?
  • Are the stick parts Seimitsu like the original, or something else?
  • Is the CD pad using the redesigned parts from the 8bitdo Neo Geo controller, or is this a different redesign?
  • If it's a new redesign, did they make any changes to improve the durability of the CD pad?
Carts
  • We know it uses flash chips, but what type? What is the expected lifespan?
  • For the AES games that had the MVS data on-cart, will the reissues have the MVS data?

No. V3 carts work perfectly fine with Furrtek adapter in an AES. Banana yellow carts as well.
Hi Leon. I've just found a banana cart being selling here in Brazil. I'm new with Neo Geo AES and I bought an AES+. So, in your opinion, it could be possible to run this 161 in 1 MVS with an adapter on an AES+? Is it possible to convert it to an AES version though? Cheers!

This has been the most common question I've gotten this past week. "Will this . . . . . cart work in AES+?"

The answer is always the same. I don't know and will not know until the AES+ comes out. Anyone buying something unofficial that works on AES hoping it will work on AES+ is taking a chance.

It's like asking me "When Playstation 6 comes out, do you think it will be able to play Playstation 5 games on it?" How can I possibly know the answer to that? :)

Hey Leon, do you know if my Super Bubble Pop cart with work with a Pranslation adapter on an AES+ and output S-video in 59.18hz, 59.94hz or 60hz? Can I use my sewing machine pcmcia sram card, and will the stereo jack be accurately reversed, with jailbars in the video? I need to know before I preorder.

OK I'll help you understand the whole situation a bit better.

The AES+ is said to be fully compatible with original Neo Geo carts. And according to furrtek his MVS adapter will work. So it will be compatible with original MVS carts also. So in theory(!!) the banana cart should work unless(!!) Plaion decides to block specific or unlicensed carts as a whole. Nobody knows yet. So you can make your own assumptions as anybody else.

Now to your question about converting which means Unibios home/arcade mode switching, right? This is also not known if Plaion will include a Unibios for mode and region etc. switching. Again, we know as much as you do at this point.

Dig a bit into the forums since you are a newcomer, you'll get the information you need about the Neo Geo and the AES+.

You gotta do your part too;)

Cheers

Spent some quality time with a stack of MVS carts and my AES console today alongside the Furrtek converter.

Has zero issues with anything. Darksoft MVS Multi worked fine. Using a Triad PSU. If the AES+ is truly 1:1 there’ll be no issues using the Darksoft on the Furrtek. Using standard BIOS on my machine also.

Someone made a new slick shell for the fusion adapter. Furrtek mentioned it once before and honestly prefer it now.

Nice! The “free” one takes a bit of fiddling about to get it lined up. I’m guessing that this one works everytime and fits just like an AES cart?

Is it snap together or are there screws?

It's somewhat cumbersome to assemble, not gonna lie. You have standoff posts between the PCB and then use screws on both sides to secure it, so it's a little finicky to get it all together. 8 screws in total. You can see the covers in the picture, but it's just a one-time assembly so it's worth it to avoid the wobble.

I highly recommend the Fusion shell, it gives the converter a more "polished" look.

Just be careful what material you print it in, I opted to have mine professionally printed in UTR Imagine Black which is really nice but has somewhat course feel to it. I ended up having to wrap it in packing tape to make sure it wouldn't scratch the AES.
