Hi everyone,

OSD/OS is a free, open-source (GPL v3) system for CRTs and arcade cabinets, and all of its source code is on GitHub: https://github.com/mehmetraif/OSD-OS

It's in beta, and I'm looking for a few people to test it on real cabinets and CRTs. Here is a short video of it running:

Flash the image to an SD card for a Raspberry Pi 4 or 5 and it boots straight into OSD/OS: no desktop, no login, and menus drawn like a VCR's on-screen display, large enough to read on a 15 kHz tube. Without a Pi it runs as an app on Windows, macOS, Linux / Steam Deck, FreeBSD and OpenBSD.

For a cabinet:
- Crown Arcade's Pi-to-JAMMA board works out of the box on the Pi 4 and the Pi 5: the cabinet's monitor at 15 kHz (240p, 288p, and 480i/576i on the Pi 4), 25 kHz or 31 kHz, and both players' sticks and buttons in the menus and in the games. The Pi 5 has no analogue sound, so it needs a USB sound card.
- MAME and FinalBurn Neo, with a selection screen (a straight list, an arc or a 3D wheel), pictures, high scores, filters, search, an attract mode, and COIN/START credits or Free Play.
- Check ROMs tells you which sets are complete for MAME and for FinalBurn Neo, and the incomplete ones can be hidden.
- Cabinet Lock keeps the cabinet on the game list; the menus open only with a button combination you choose.
- LAN Play: up to six players across the machines on your network, with no internet. A Pi, a Windows PC, a Mac, a Linux PC or a Steam Deck play together, each machine bringing as many players as it has controllers.
- A LAN core of its own: for games on the local network OSD/OS builds a patched FinalBurn Neo core, and the patch is in the repo (https://github.com/mehmetraif/OSD-OS/blob/main/scripts/fbneo-lan.patch). Players are seated in the order they press COIN or START, whichever machine they are on, and four-player games whose cabinet DIP switch is set to two players play with all four.
- Cave's CV1000 games on a Pi: Akai Katana, Mushihime-sama, DoDonPachi DaiFukkatsu, Espgaluda II, Deathsmiles and the rest. On the stock core, netplay keeps the board's 128 MB of video memory in every state it saves, so joining a game takes about 10 GB of RAM and hosting one 18.8 GB. The LAN core leaves that out: 2 GB to join and 3.1 GB to host, so a Raspberry Pi 4 or Pi 5 with 4 GB plays them with others on the LAN.
- Online play through RetroArch's lobby, and RetroAchievements in hardcore mode, with leaderboards on the selection screen.

There is a TV side too (films, Plex, Jellyfin, Emby, YouTube), but the arcade is what I'd most like tested.

So far I've tested it on a Pi 4, a Pi 5 and a Windows 11 PC, including LAN games between the three. The other systems are built and pass automated tests, but nobody has tried them on real hardware yet. I'm especially looking for:
- Crown board owners, on a Pi 4 or a Pi 5
- other JAMMA setups, and CRTs on SCART RGB or composite
- anyone who can try a LAN game between two or more machines

Useful to report: your hardware, the display mode you chose, whether the picture fits the screen, whether every button, COIN and START work in MAME and FinalBurn Neo games, and anything that confused you. Reply here or open an issue on GitHub.

No ROMs are included or linked; you'll need your own sets.

How it's made: OSD/OS grew out of Anthony Caccese's 240-MP. I design it and test it on my own hardware, and it is developed with the help of several AI tools.

Thanks for reading. Any feedback, good or bad, helps.

anything that confused you.

I am setting it up and there's a lot of reading to do ;) ... so congrats on documenting everything but really, everything works if you follow your menus and config!

plays neogeo games without having to add the bios (nice!) , plays movies directly BUT ... and I'm sure I'll find how to disable it but I need to run right now: putting it by default is annoying: that "OSD/OS"

edit: sure enough, it's under settings, TV / movie, channel Logo and yes, it can be disabled, or point on all corners! and seems to be configurable as well. Again, there are a LOT of settings and a lot of (claude code) work went into this thing.

I'll try it on the crown jamma and report back

@Mrhide thanks for trying it! My aim was for OSD/OS to be as simple as possible out of the box. With that in mind, turning the TV logo off by default makes sense, so I'll change that.

I know there are a lot of settings. The Setup page on the website, with its separate TV and Arcade paths, was meant to help with that, though there's still room to simplify things. I'm still figuring out how best to organise the settings within OSD/OS. I don't want reaching a setting to take too many button presses, but without grouping, the list gets very long. If you have thoughts on how you'd like them organised, I'd love to hear them.

I'm also curious about your experience with it on the Crown JAMMA board.

@West thanks!

I got the crown jamma board as well so gonna give it a try this weekend if I can.

I kinda see the pi5 as my poor man’s CAVE multi. Would never say it’s accurate emulation or anything but for the money I have plenty of fun with it.
