The 3B's are still quite easily available on the second hard market - I recently purchased a couple from FB Marketplace. Granted, I paid very close to the same price as the 3B+ (4's are still slightly more than the 3B+).
I'm not sure how much time and effort would be required to make it compatible for the 3B+/4, but it might not be worth it in the Dev's eyes.
The one thing I'd love and wish I had the ability to do is to have a loading screen to know how long left to transfer the bin but I've been surviving without it, so it's more of a "nice to have"
