Hello!

Despite my better judgement telling me to not bring home any more electronics (I already have so much stuff hooked up to my AV equipment that I'm shocked I haven't tripped a circuit breaker yet), I have decided to add a JAMMA board to the mix. I do not have space for a cab or CRT, and therefore I need to somehow get from JAMMA to HDMI, with a 180 degree rotated screen.

Based on the screen rotation requirement, I am leaning towards picking up an Axunworks CBOX. Figuring out how to get an AV output from the CBOX converted to HDMI however, is making me question my own sanity.

I was expecting this to be easy. CBOX SCART -> retroTink 5x -> HDMI. But the more I read up on this, the CBOX SCART cables do not necessarily work with (and may actually damage) the retroTink 5x. Ideally I would just use the VGA cable instead, but my 5x pro does not accept VGA. As-is, it seems like my options are:

Get the CBOX, sell the retroTink 5x and upgrade to the astronomically expensive retroTink 4k or retroTink 4k-CE for VGA support

Skip the CBOX for a cheaper supergun, upgrade to the astronomically expensive retroTink 4k to use the built in screen rotate (not a fan of this option due to the added lag)

Get the CBOX + axunworks RGB to Composite & S Video converter as an intermediate step, which is cheaper but requires an additional power cable (very undesirable)

Is there an easier way to do this? I would definitely appreciate any advice from any others who do consolized setups rather than running in a cab
 
Wait, why 180° rotation? Not 90° CCW for tate?

The Axunworks Cbox will rotate directional controls, but not the picture. To rotate the picture 90°, you need something like RetroTink 4K Pro.

For 15 kHz Dsub-15 support on RT5X, get an adapter.

Cheap: Rondo Products HD15-2-SCART (I have one of these)
Fancy & expensive: Consoles4U Retroverse

Note that these will simply pass 15 kHz RGB into a Dsub-15 adapter, which is great for your RT5X. They won't upscale video to 31 kHz VGA.

But the more I read up on this, the CBOX SCART cables do not necessarily work with (and may actually damage) the retroTink 5x.

Edit for a better answer: Newer Cboxes have a switch to set RGB impedance to 75 ohm. Set that, and you're golden. My older Cbox doesn't have that switch and would need a SCART cable with a resistor on the csync line. cc @drfunk2k in case he has any Cbox wisdom to add
 
@9999 Damage Ah yes you're correct 90 degrees not 180. Great info, I must have misread one of the reviews for CBOX because yeah I was under the impression it could rotate the picture. Thank you for clarifying that because you saved me from feeling very dumb down the line haha.

Everything in my entertainment setup currently runs to a BenQ 3000i projector so unfortunately rotating the display itself is totally out of the question. Maybe down the line I could consider getting a proper computer monitor and use that instead, but for now it sounds like the retroTink 4K might be the best option because otherwise I won't have a good way to deal with the screen orientation
 
Tink4k pro is the ticket.
Skip the cheaper version as it won't rotate.
Fyi, you have to turn on decimation to rotate, and don't be afraid to play with wide sync and sync to get an arcade board to behave, then crop as needed.
 
Thanks for the info everyone! HAS supergun seems to be sold out for the moment, but the Axun supergun-mini looks like it has pretty much the same functionality and cost. I’ve had several retroTink products in the past and have always had a great experience with them, so happy to go back for the 4K in this case
