Hi everyone,

I’m looking for help with my Sega Rambo Deluxe Cabinet (Lindbergh Red EX).

Background

  • Cabinet ist original, except the tv - there is a Samsung tv inside
  • Original IDE HDD, original keychip, original CF card
  • For some reason, the previous owner had routed the audio directly from the sound card to the tv via a mini-jack audio cable. So the sound was playing through the TV.
  • Sega AMP 838-14515-A0191 - didn't work, status LED was always red (but didn't bother me - I had sound from tv)
I briefly installed a Lindbergh multiboot setup (different HDD, key, CF).
The multiboot menu worked, but:
  • many games did not run
  • games that worked like Ghost Squar or Primeval Hunt had no sound
  • Rambo from Multiboot did boot but when game starts:
    • loading screen → SEGA logo → CRIWARE logo
    • crash exactly when the intro video should start
    • return to multiboot menu

I then restored the cabinet to full original hardware. Now the same issue occurs on my original hardware!

Current problem (even with original hardware)

  • Rambo loads
  • SEGA logo → CRIWARE logo
  • crash at intro video (Credit overlay flashes briefl & grey screen with the X)
  • right after that Error message: “Error 10 – Unexpected Game Program Failure”

Audio / AMP situation

Tried fixing the issue with AI. It points to the AMP not being enabled, causing Lindbergh to fail when sound appears in the game-intro.
  • I have two original Sega AMPs tested – same behavior
  • AMP status LED stays red
  • Volume LEDs react to knob

Tests / measurements

  • BIOS accessible, CMOS reset, battery replaced
  • had Volume control board completely disconnected
  • AMP control connector has 3 pins:
    • Black/White: GND
    • Green/Brown: ~1.3 V
    • Yellow/Brown: ~3.2 V
  • AI said I should try pulling “Enable” to +5 V via 1–4.7 kΩ resistor:
    • voltage still clamps at ~3.2 V
    • AMP LED remains red
    • game does not start

Questions:

The multiboot attempt messed up my game. Is the issue really related to the AMP board? Or could it be related the graphics card? Or Something else?
I'm really at a loss right now. I would be very grateful for your help. 🥊

The game doesn't care about the audio amp. It has no way of knowing if the amp is working or not.

If you have the means I would try reinstalling the game just to rule that out. The installation disc image can be found on Archive.org. You need to burn it to a DVD and use a portable USB drive to install it.

That said, the graphics card being the problem is definitely possible. If you know someone with another Red Ex, try swapping graphics cards with them.

Thanks very much for you reply. ChatGPT argues that it used to work when audio was routed directly to the TV because the game never actually used the AMP path, so the internal audio check was effectively bypassed. After the multiboot and restoring original hardware, Rambo now strictly checks the AMP during audio initialization. Even with sound routed to the TV, the game crashes with Error 10 if the AMP is not enabled, because the internal check cannot be bypassed. Apparently, especially the Lindbergh Red Ex system is very fragile at this point.
Another possibility sometimes mentioned by AI is the GPU firmware. Some Lindbergh games apparently rely on the GPU’s internal firmware for video and partly audio initialization, and a corrupted or faulty firmware can cause crashes when the video starts after the SEGA/CRIWARE. Do you think a new firmware for the graphics card could have been installed through multiboot?

I'm not sure what to make of the AI analysis.... But I will definitely follow your instructions now. I will reinstall the game first. 👍

Update: Today I tried to install my game from the original DVD to a different HDD using a no-name-DVD-drive (plug and play). The HDD seemed to be recognized. The installation ("Load release image") appeared to work without any problems. However, after a while, I received an error message. "Error 18 – "I/O Device Not Found".

Could this error be related to the DVD drive? Or does it perhaps indicate a problem when I'm starting the game with the original hard drive?

I've recorded a video of the problem using all original hardware. (It starts at exactly 10 seconds.)

Try uninstalling the game from the service menu.

Could be the DVD itself, DVD drive, or the HDD. Make sure you are using the same brand/model as the original HDD (not a SSD or such). Sometimes these games are very picky about hardware. I have a Rambo and needed to reinstall the game to a new HDD and it worked with a generic DVD drive. I bought the same model HDD off ebay.

First, I'd like to thank you again for your replies.

Update: I've since bought an identical hard drive to the original. Unfortunately, the same problem persists. I'm installing the game from the original DVD. The "Load Release" process completes to 100%. Then, for a millisecond, the message "Check Game Spec" appears on screen, followed immediately by "Error 18 IO Device Not Found".

Another forum member asked me to check the hardware components and take some photos. I noticed the following: My system seems to have a GeForce 7800GS installed.

If I'm correctly informed, a Rambo system should have a GeForce 7600GS. Can anyone confirm this? Could this be the cause of the problem?

He also wanted a photo from the mainboard.
He suspects that I might also have a Lindbergh Yellow mainboard installed.

I'm not sure about that. Can any of you tell from this photo?

If the Yellow mainboard thing is true: How on earth did the previous owner get the Rambo running with this hardware mix-up?

My Rambo runs on yellow. Unfortunately I don't have access to it or time to spend investigating further. Is your IO plugged into the correct JVS port? Has power?

Yes the cable from IO to JVS port is plugged in correctly and has power. I've tried it over and over again. Still the same issue. Do you have any other leads?
Or is there a specialized Lindbergh repair service somewhere? I'm quite desperate, unfortunately.
