What's new

So whats next on the list of multis?

I'd love to buy a PGM and they are cheap for just the console but I've been looking for a decent deal for the console plus a working cart and haven't found one yet. it seems easy enough to source the console that I'd might as well just wait to find a game I'm interested in first then snag a console once I've got it.

If it's on Aliexpress, YOU KNOW IT'S LEGIT, 578 units in stock, ~$100 inc. shipping, and the board comes with a fantastic fighting game!!!! Woop!

EDIT: it appears Ali has 20688 used MVS in stock also! He must be srs 1337 gamers..

On a second thought, a System16 multi might be interesting if it can use the original encrypted ROMs. The keys for several sets have been dumped so it's just a matter of writing the code to use them.

I'd love a Naomi cart, I could finally unhook the NetDIMM and the Pi that's feeding it. First world problems though. CPS1 would be amazing as well of course.

This really would be cool...
Imagine using the same engine as the Neo to run the menu. That would save a lot of time.
The Naomi is obviously one of the great arcade machines with the most titles - next to the Neo Geo, I think it is in a class by itself. Most of us struggle at some point with touchy power and difficulties with GD-rom games and the hassle of the Pi for net booting. To me, the Naomi is an obvious choice for the next project and would be up there with the Neo Geo multi-cart as far as title and playability (especially considering it plays Atomiswave games as well). Here's hoping for the Naomi multi!

As much as I'd enjoy having a simplified NAOMI solution, I see that as a "when we run out of other cool things" project. We have a working NAOMI solution. Elegant? Maybe not, but it does get the job done. Darksoft and some other engineers have a limited window of interest and/or time to work on these projects. I'd much rather see new ground broken.

Sorry undamned but I've just gotta "thumbs down" this comment.
Its that attitude I am so sick of hearing, not just here (on arcade-projects) but in life in general...

"What we have is good enough"

I just want to scream at them whenever I hear it...

"People like you (folks who say this) do NOT change the world, they don't make a difference.
Nothing in this world is or has ever been perfect, but what? That means we give up the quest for perfection and just move on?
NEVER!"

So, you'd rather have people working on improving the internal combustion car, than working on an all-new electric one? Or maybe I am misunderstanding your post or undamned's post, because what I understand from UD's post is that he wants progress in other "unexplored" areas (and I agree with that). Sure, it would be nice improving the already existent NAOMI kit, but wouldn't it be nicer to create something entirely new? especially when resources (like DS abilities) are limited...

Regards.

You understood my point perfectly, aha2940.

This...

I mean @jassin000 would you rather have a NAOMI multi or a CPS1 multi?

No one is saying don't make a NAOMI multi, they're just saying we have a usable solution at the moment so we'd rather see a solution available where none currently exists before improving on the stuff we've got.

I think making a Naomi multi would be nice. It can be sold for a price of 400 USD and will have loading times of about a 30-40 seconds for 256Mb games. Is it worth? Will people pay that amount? I don't know. So for now I'll skip this one and focus on new kits. I'll follow an strategy similar to MAME to avoid vultures and will publish like I did with Taito F3, when it's ready :)

Another thought I want to throw in about "which multi should be out next":

I've never being interested in Naomi because lots of the games were ported to the Dreamcast which shared a very similar hardware and, as a result, the games were pretty much arcade perfect (feel free to point out any relevant games which haven't been converted, I didn't check this recently).

IMHO, the most important multis should be those with games which never received a decent port to any console and, as such, emulation/MAME have been the only way to play those games properly.

Just my 2 cents, I'll gladly see anything released for the sake of preservation and ability to play on original hardware.

I agree!
I will gladly pay 400$ for a true Naomi flash cart.
It's totally worth it, the system has a huge library of quality games not to mention your amazing Atomiswave ports.

@twistedsymphony Yes I agree that a CPS1 multi would be better than a Naomi multi... But that is ONLY because I would rather have a CPS1 Multi period.
NOT because what we have for Naomi is currently acceptable, or should be thought of as "good enough" in any respect.

It's that attitude I don't like guys, not the preference to have something new.
Next time someone says "what we have is good enough" I think the only followup question that needs to be asked "but is it a perfect solution?" if the answer is no, then its NO... End of story!
