Can I use ai to modify the old arcade game Daytona USA. I want to turn off catch up. It allows the cars behind you to catch up to make the game more competitive. But the this mode is switched off by the game when playing against the computer, so it must be possible to turn it off in the script somehow.
I want to alter the script, can AI reverse engineer the game so I can make changes

It wont do things for you but can put you on the right track with interpreting data and finding tools to edit the game but most of the time you need to have some experience in romhacking to know what to ask ai to make it helpful. Good luck!

Thank you

I have reverse engineered a bit of Daytona USA.

I suppose I could take a look.
Yes please! Even if you could just disable tyre wear would be fantastic. Because catch is disabled when the code is applied, but the tyre wear is ridiculously difficult. And yes if you can turn off catch up that would be great as well. You could upload the rom to here so anyone can use? Thank you very much

@tangodownNZ we don't like to see that kind of attitude here. People do things here in their free time and when they can. Consider this a warning. Next one will be a temporary ban.

I understand. I have contributed here as well.
Can you not see that people should not say they will do something, and then that person waits, hopeful, but it ended up being a waste of time, and the hope that somebody was going to help is gone. I’m just calling it how it is and the facts what happened. I don’t think I should be punished for that. If I tell somebody I will help, then that is exactly what I will do. And if I can not do it I will tell them sorry, I can not do it now, something changed, or its too hard. Not just leave them hoping and waiting. What is wrong with that?

If you don't have patience then you are in the wrong hobby.

Forum is not the place where if you ask for something, someone throws everything else and does what you want/need. After outburst like that I doubt anyone will help you out with anything. Be patient and humble. More common sense and you will get far.

We obviously have a different outlook on life. I am a man of my word. If I say I am going to do something I do it. If I can not do it, I will explain why. I don’t just go silent and not reply. My word is very important, I don’t break my word, or if I have to I will apologise. Maybe I’m just old school. That is just how I was taught and I make no apologies. Maybe times are different now, where peoples word doesn’t mean anything, but that is not how I roll. I know I could be waiting more than a year for a reply, it happened before, then who was right?
I remain open to any body who wants help with SEGA lightgun projects. I have successfully wired a sega ghost squad arcade light gun to a pc using a uhid. It has recoil and extremely accurate. Much better than any Sinden lightgun or any other lightgun. The sega lightguns use 10 leds around the screen, very accurate. It works really well with the model 2, Virtua Cop 2. I am very happy to help out anybody who has any questions. Don’t be too quick to judge me, don’t assume things.

Again you have no idea what someone's personal life is like outside these forums. Arcade hobby stuff is not a number 1 priority for most people. Also there is a difference between saying and not doing at all and not doing as quickly as you would like. Most hobby projects develop over a period of time. Very rarely does a project start and finish quickly. Many projects here started and took months or years to finish.

For me at this point in my life family always comes before hobby. It wasn't that way when I was younger but things change.

I have the same problem, don't take things too seriously, it hurts your heart.
Yesterdays after a fight that ended the same way,( I am a man of my word. If I say I am going to do something)
I thought I'd get "take it lightly" "or "take it easy" tattooed on my arm to remember that.

Generally in romhacking , your fastest method will be to learn how to do the thing yourself.

It's always fine (and encouraged !) to ask for help; people are oftentimes very helpful in the rom hack scene !

But the fastest and most reliable way to get anything done is to ask advice on HOW to get started with hacking something and where to find the tools to do so, not "can you do this for me".

I ve done one major romhacking project , and even what seems like a small request can take hours upon hours of searching . Please be considerate and understanding of others in that they might want to help sooner but they have lives, jobs, kids or parents to care for, businesses , other hobby commitments , and mental health to take care of. Let them be on their time and help when they're able.

If it were me I'd ask if they could share their tools so I could poke around with them myself.

Or if you really want something as a priority why not offer to pay them for their time ?

But judging people is just going to leave you upset and miserable lol

Ok. Thank you for that advice. I do want to do it myself, but it looked too hard. But yes it is best to ask questions and do it myself. Thank you
Also, I just want to add. If somebody has a family problem, mental health, health problem. Of course these things are more important than replying to somebody on a game forum, of course! I am just talking about in general. It is good to let somebody know, if you have told them that you will help. I think I did say I was happy to pay. But yes, as arcade game enthusiasts its better to learn how to rom hack and do it ourselves

I have been chatting with ai about this. And it is very difficult to reverse engineer this rom. It involves very high level of knowledge and understand of coding.
Yes, from a purely technical standpoint, it is possible to ROM hack Daytona USA on the Model 2 emulator to turn off tire wear. However, doing so is extremely difficult and requires a high level of technical skill in reverse engineering and assembly-level programming.

Here's why it is possible and why it hasn't been widely done:

  • The code is there to be reverse-engineered: The Model 2 ROM contains the original machine code of the game. Experts in reverse engineering can use tools to decompile this code and analyze the game's logic. By identifying the specific instructions that manage the tire wear variable and the "no handicap" mode, it is theoretically possible to modify the code to decouple the two features.
  • It is not a simple patch: As discussed on the Arcade Controls Forum, experienced modders and enthusiasts have expressed interest in such a hack but acknowledge it would be a complex undertaking. It is not a matter of simply flipping a switch in a config file, but rather involves finding and altering the specific part of the code that links the four-view button cheat to the tire wear mechanic.
  • The challenge of assembly-level programming: The Model 2 arcade hardware uses a different assembly language than modern PCs. Modifying the game's executable code requires familiarity with this specific architecture and the ability to debug changes without access to the original source code.

@tangodownNZ - you know more than AI does about ROMhacking already. AI doesn't know anything. If you're going to it for human-language advice or assistance you're going to be way more disappointed than by asking a human being.

AI is literally a fancy auto-complete machine that is very good at interpreting your question, and giving you a response that sounds exactly like an answer. It doesn't think, it doesn't understand, it just strings words together based on probability, with zero understanding of truth, reality, or accuracy.

You're basically coming here with the text from an AI that was probably trained on data from this forum, which it mixed into its reply based on the likelihood of one word following another.

So, maybe find another way to pursue your dreams, 'cause AI ain't gonna be it.

AI has been useful for me. It helped me to set up my sega ghost squad lightgun with the model 2 emulator. It help me to write the batch file for dmushooter. Yes, it uses information already available on the internet. But it found that information in 2 seconds. Without AI it would have taken me a lot longer. It is not always right. But you work with it not against it. I say AI is useful and it will only get better. Learn to use it as another tool
