Use AI to alter Daytona USA

AI has been useful for me. It helped me to set up my sega ghost squad lightgun with the model 2 emulator. It help me to write the batch file for dmushooter. Yes, it uses information already available on the internet. But it found that information in 2 seconds. Without AI it would have taken me a lot longer. It is not always right. But you work with it not against it. I say AI is useful and it will only get better. Learn to use it as another tool
Given that the AI industry is haemorrhaging money, the crash is coming soon. I'm probably not the one who'll need to learn a new tool.

As long as you know the limits and you double check the data, I hope it serves you well until the industry crashes.

AI is helping me to rom hack, debug and reverse engineer daytona usa. This is an extremely complex task. I have tried on this forum and arcade controls. It is very difficult to find people with the skill and time to do this. I would not be able to do this without AI. It is very useful indeed

The cynical side of me makes me think you're a psy-op from one of the AI companies yourself. :rolleyes:

Don't you have some investors and shareholders to go hoodwink?

You have to be careful about AI because it is often wrong. It scrapes info from the web, social media, etc and A LOT of info is incorrect. AI is created and trained my man still so it also has a bad habit of predicting what answer you are fishing for. Thats why you never ask AI for its opinion unless you are trying to have your opinion affirmed by it. ;)

It is great at getting you a starting point on subjects you are new to however.

Also its great for manipulating data in files, which normally you would spend hours to do manually in hex editor :)

Thanks for that. Ai is good for searching for answer to logical problems like rom hacking. We know the answers are on the internet, but it would take hundreds of hours manually going through 1000s of data bases and literature to find specific answers. Ai gives me these answers in seconds. As I said its a tool, and a dam good one. Of course we as humans need to interpret this information and decide if the answers A) make sense B) align with the task at hand C) are not misleading or incorrect. Then we can proceed with caution. Asking ai for opinions on things like politics or ethics is a completely different thing, thats not what this is about, cheers

what code disables catch-up?
Hold on to your horses mate. I am entry level rom hacker. I have literally just started. I am currently looking at the rom through the mame debugger. But this is a different rom to the model 2 rom. Which is an issue straight off the bat

I meant just what in-game code disables catch up. I found it on your other post though, all four buttons at course select. If you try using the mame cheat tools to find addresses that change when you enter the code, it finds these 10 locations.

Address=00501AB8 Start=00 Current=01
Address=00540C32 Start=00 Current=01
Address=00540C72 Start=00 Current=01
Address=00540CB2 Start=00 Current=01
Address=00540CF2 Start=00 Current=01
Address=00540D32 Start=00 Current=01
Address=00540D72 Start=00 Current=01
Address=00540DB2 Start=00 Current=01
Address=00540DF2 Start=00 Current=01
Address=00540E32 Start=00 Current=01

I haven't really looked at what those addresses are but I'm guessing 501AB8 is perhaps relevant since it's nearer the other player memory locations (5051B4 is speed, listed in the pugsy cheat xml I directed you to in the other post). Perhaps the rest go towards driving this pixel in the corner of the screen, I don't know I didn't really look too deep. I don't know this processor and I'm not about to learn, but it feels relevant that this byte is set when you enter the code. I would set watchpoints for these and see what happens after the game starts.

Otherwise you could perhaps find the tire wear setting by starting a normal game, then flipping this bit, and then using cheats to see if there is some number somewhere that is going up or down now, probably near the player data (i.e. near that 5051B4 speed memory location).

cool. thank you for looking at that for me. I must be honest. I did not look at starting with simple game first. I just want to get straight into it. I can see the code now using the mame debugger. but that is as far as i am up to atm. I will see if I can get the address' to change when the cheat code is entered to catch up to you. Thank you for your valuable help.
P.S I am trying to debug with the model 2 rom, which looks like won't be able to do using the mame debugger. because trying to open the daytona.zip rom in mame does not work

daytona.zip surely does work in mame and its debugger, that's what I was using. Just use an up-to-date mame version and an up-to-date mame rom, and bios (model1io.zip). archive.org tends to have any files you need, if mame says you're missing a file e.g. the bios. You're probably missing the bios.

thank you, ekorz. Sorry I was not clear. I can get mame to open daytona. But it will not open the daytona.zip from the model 2 roms. The model 2 daytona.zip is different to the mame daytona.zip However, I seem to have overcome this problem by using the the mame daytona.zip in the model 2 emu by adding a few missing files. But to be clear. it does not work the other way. the model 2 daytona.zip rom does not work in the mame emu. but now that I know I can modify the mame rom I should be able to paste this altered rom back into the model 2 rom folder, and it should work, because I just tested it and it does. The reason I want to use model 2 is that the graphics are so much better in model 2. But yes it appears that we can use the mame debugger now.

P.S “you don't need to confirm, I'm telling you those are the 10 addresses that change when you enter the code.” - I don’t want to confirm, I believe you. I just want to “catch up” to you by getting the same addresses at my end

Just an update. I have started using Cheat Engine to see what I can find. Also joined supermodel, I'll probably get yelled at, hahaha

Let's all be constructive and see how we can help @tangodownNZ reach his goal of making this special version of Daytona.
