Use AI to alter Daytona USA

Let's all be constructive and see how we can help @tangodownNZ reach his goal of making this special version of Daytona.
Thank you Darksoft. I am making progress, but I do need and welcome all help. Also thank you to the people like ekorz and others who have helped me. Even small contributions and tips are very useful

I meant just what in-game code disables catch up. I found it on your other post though, all four buttons at course select. If you try using the mame cheat tools to find addresses that change when you enter the code, it finds these 10 locations.

Address=00501AB8 Start=00 Current=01
Address=00540C32 Start=00 Current=01
Address=00540C72 Start=00 Current=01
Address=00540CB2 Start=00 Current=01
Address=00540CF2 Start=00 Current=01
Address=00540D32 Start=00 Current=01
Address=00540D72 Start=00 Current=01
Address=00540DB2 Start=00 Current=01
Address=00540DF2 Start=00 Current=01
Address=00540E32 Start=00 Current=01

I haven't really looked at what those addresses are but I'm guessing 501AB8 is perhaps relevant since it's nearer the other player memory locations (5051B4 is speed, listed in the pugsy cheat xml I directed you to in the other post). Perhaps the rest go towards driving this pixel in the corner of the screen, I don't know I didn't really look too deep. I don't know this processor and I'm not about to learn, but it feels relevant that this byte is set when you enter the code. I would set watchpoints for these and see what happens after the game starts.

Otherwise you could perhaps find the tire wear setting by starting a normal game, then flipping this bit, and then using cheats to see if there is some number somewhere that is going up or down now, probably near the player data (i.e. near that 5051B4 speed memory location).
I can see the game running with the mame debugger running now. But I can not see how to "find addresses that change when I enter the code" How do I do this please

The cheat documentation is here
https://docs.mamedev.org/debugger/cheats.html

I forget what exactly I did but I certainly did an init command to start the engine, then probably a command or two to reduce it to addresses not-changing at all during the screen select, then I inputted the 4 button command, then I asked to see only addresses that had changed. That left me with those 10 and I asked to display them so I could copy/paste.

Otherwise you can open a new memory window from the gui (I think it’s just called File->New Memory Window). I’m not at the computer but there aren’t too many tabs and it should be right up top. Memory documentation is https://docs.mamedev.org/debugger/memory.html if you want to learn about watchpoints etc

Iirc there are some videos out there of people doing stuff in debugger, like rom hacks or cheats, and those may be worth watching too so you can get your bearings. Adding a small patch for a simpler game, eg infinite lives in Pac-Man, is going to be a better on-ramp than trying this first.

Thats good. I’ll try that. Have you tried using Cheat Engine. I feel like its user interface is more easier to understand

Mame is already loaded with the rom’s drivers, memory maps, disassembly for that processor, etc while cheat engine is going to think you’re hacking mame.exe, a 64bit program running on windows.

Turns out @biggestsnoicfan is a twat after all. I knew I should trust my gut feeling. He has been active on here and on Discord and here this entire time. He ignored me on Discord as well. I really could not care less if he doesn't want to help me, that is entirely up to him. But the fact that he said he would help me and then just ignored me and no response (even though he saw my messages), means he is a twat on some kind of power trip. So I hereby formally retract my apology

I won’t speak for him but this probably isn’t going to win you any goodwill with others here. If you wanted to page him it’s @biggestsonicfan

Also keep in mind he mirrored/published and documented those tools you linked me in your PM: https://github.com/biggestsonicfan/i960-CTOOLS-with-NINDY so he’s been helpful in that respect even if he wasn’t helpful directly.

Thank you @ekorz , noted. Nothing but respect for you. I don't really care anymore tbh. If he wants to play mind games he can play them with somebody else. It was you that gave me the push I needed, now I am deep in the rabbit hole, haha
