Hello there,
Do somebody knows which material is the stud plate (CQN-1057) of the New Astro CP? Maybe aluminium?
Thanks

>Kidkaos : thank you

>thegreathopper : I'd not say it's stainless steel since there is always a lot of rust on them. As far as I know, stainless steel do not rust. Maybe it depend on the grade? Also, Ive try a magnet and it was attracted, so my deduction would be it's not stainless steel
I have three sets of them that I brought to the factory to chrome. The chrome looks good, but once the process's finished, the M4 flange nut do not fit to the steam anymore. The chrome process alterate the tread. Also, the steams are fragile, I already have broken one. So, I thought it would be possible to cut the head of a machine screw and solder it to the plate (stud). But for this I have to know the material which is used for the plate to buy the correct screw (stainless or 3cr, etc...).

Stainless can rust if it’s cheap, but I reckon it’s chrome plated steel as it’s magnetic. If you have any more chromed you will need to get the threaded part covered.

Okay. Yeah, I should cover them. Btw, if I want to solder the stem to the plate, a steel 3cr or a stainless A2 machine screw is compatible with the chrome plated steel?

Trying to deal with this myself as I clean up my astro city cabinets. I’ve done my best to clean them up but there is still a lot of stubborn rust that I can’t get off without resorting to something more abrasive.

I don’t want to use something abrasive if it’s going to remove the chrome plating, but if it is indeed stainless, the corrosion resistance should be unharmed by scraping with a wire brush pen.

A few points:
- Stainless steel *can* be ferritic (will attract magnets) depending on the composition, so that is not a determining factor
- Stainless steel often has a “grain” to it, and it looks like this piece does also 🤔
- It could be that the threaded studs are *not* stainless and that is where the rust is coming from… The stainless steel kick plate suffers from this issue, its rust free except where those nuts are welded to the plate for the leg levelers to be screwed in.

I’m hoping this piece is indeed stainless because I’m going to attack it with a wire pen and see what happens…
