Hi,
I have an issue with my Zero Gunner 2 cartridge.
The cart is in very good shape, no corrosion, no cut traces... Everything looks fine.
When I insert it in my Naomi mobo I have an error 01
The game name doesn't show up in test mode.
I took the IC22, dumped it, compare it to MAME and it was fine.
Burned another IC22, same issue.
Took the first 4megabytes from a decrypted ZG2, burned it to a 27C322, same issue.
Changed the little IC's by a professional dude (with good tools), same issue...

What did I miss ? What should I try next ?

error 01 can occur if you're using the wrong region bios.

Also check for bent pins on the connector.

worst case you can send it to Ken @ i repair sega

I already have a double bios (Jap/US)
I'm on Naomi 2
Does the game need a specific bios ?

No bent pins btw

Does the game need a specific bios ?
I normally use a multi-bios, but I did have a Cannon Spike Cart that would ONLY boot on an original JP bios and refused to boot with the multi-bios for some reason.

Did you do a cartridge rom test? do all the checksums come back 0000 or random and change every time?

Did your professional dude replace every logic chip? there's a lot of 245 / 373s (9 if I remember correctly), they all need to be replaced.

I tried with a japanese bios only (23605C): same issue

I don't have a cartridge rom test (I'll try to make one if easy)
Yes, the dude replaced all 9 IC's : same issue

You just press the test button on the Naomi motherboard with the cartridge installed and there's an option near the bottom to do a cartridge test, it'll give you the checksum for the eprom and the maskroms.

The custom 315-6050 CPLD chip is bad, you'll need to take a replacement from a donor cartridge.
Is the security chip the same on each cart irrespective of the ID number on the top of the chip or are they cart specific?

I’m betting it’s specific (because security related) which practically renders the cart uneconomical to repair because you basically need the same cart to fix it.

They aren't game specific but not every cart uses them. I was going to link you to guru's Naomi page that lists what cartridge type every game uses but his page seems to be down at the moment.

I have a Zombie Revenge cart and it consistently delivers error 01 and the following on the cart test.

Assuming it’s not the security chip and IC20 and IC21 are bad. Although I am confused it can’t recognise the IC type for any.

Zombie Revenge has no chips populated in IC20 and IC21, which is why they return 0000

the checksums and chip size are all stored in IC22, so it's entirely possible that your IC22 is bad.

I bought this (supposedly) working off another forum. When it arrived it had a bad connector, with cracked plastic and bent pins which I replaced. My seller said he hadn’t tested it before sending it to me.

I then ruled out IC22 after buying another working cart. I then replaced all the SMD 245 chips and some others and no change.

It’s been sat with me for over a year now and only after reading this post has it caught my attention.

I have a few Virtua Tennis carts I would be happy to sacrifice -but realistically I should have sent this back when I first got it and got my money back

Ok, so this became a challenge of irritation more than anything. I swapped out IC 42 from a Virtua Tennis cart to the ZR cart and that made no difference.

I then soldered the IC 42 chip taken from the ZR cart on to the VT cart to keep that complete and to see what would happen to that. The VT cart booted but the Sega logo was mirrored and the game froze.

I then decide to go with my original plan. I desoldered all the ROMs from the VT cart and did the same with the ZR cart. Then tinned the unpopulated pads on the VT cart (time consuming irritation) and then soldered the ZR ROMs to the unpopulated VT cart with the ZR IC42 chip already on it.

Booted the cart and it all worked except it looked like the zombies were radioactive with some sprite issues. Went into test mode and got bad IC8. Took it apart and reflowed IC8 (noticed a possible bad joint), rebooted and now all good.

I know it seems extreme to do the transplant but this just turned into an all out challenge to draw a line under it. We also now know IC42 isn’t transferable and has a unique number that’s cart specific.

Alternatively remove the chip and install a cracked version of the game to the ROMs you might get away with just a new IC22
I did it with same result, but it was late and I was tired, I'll try it again tonight and double check everything.
