What's new
Thanks. I didn't think it would.

Looks like the search for cheap compatible cards are in order... I'll order a couple from aliexpress and hope they work

Edit: ordered 5 of the 512mb cards here https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000150162779.html?spm=a2g0n.order_list.0.0.21ef1802bMFjWM

I'll report back in a month or two when I get them :D

Got the 5x CF cards that I ordered today.

Of the 5, 3 have successfully loaded.

This is essentially what I did to all 5 cards

Used the -W flag, formatted to FAT default allocation and ran it again to copy the file. Naturally the thing that changed is the Key ID.

Code:
C:\Naomi\CF\gcfi_1.30>gcfi -W -p -r -s 0x3233 -d D:\ -l ABC.BIN -g MVC2.bin
os version : 10.0 (19043)
logical drive : D:\
size : 488MB
sector size : 512
removing files: done
physical drive: 2
wiping sectors: done
please eject and reinsert the CF card before formatting it as file system: FAT

C:\Naomi\CF\gcfi_1.30>gcfi -p -r -s 0x3233 -d D:\ -l ABC.BIN -g MVC2.bin
os version : 10.0 (19043)
logical drive : D:\
size : 488MB
sector size : 512
removing files: done
physical drive: 2
sector offset : 0x3233
game file : MVC2.bin
file size : 143242752 bytes
loader file : ABC.BIN
output file : MVC2.BIN
region byte : 0xff
game crc32 : 0xe834a592
loader crc32 : 0x17cb5a6d
copying file  : MVC2.bin -> D:\MVC2.BIN
region patch : done
generating xor: done
creating csum : done

What I did notice is the two that appear to not work (just loads a black screen) have a character at the end instead of a number. I'm also not sure if it's case sensitive.

When I run the ataid.exe, it shows as 0x564b and 0x354a, when I try and load these cards, it just doesn't want to work for me (I've tried writing in both upper and lowercase, but still just a black screen)

Here's an example ataid excerpt

Anybody ever come across this issue before? It's just strange that the other 3x have loaded the game fine, but these two haven't and they're the same brand CF

Can you show us the complete ATAID from one which does not work and one which works ?

These two don't work (i just get black screen no matter one)

I'm not sure if it's the cards, my dimm (if I did anything wrong? It's a flashed 4.02 from 1.02), my naomi (seems to work perfectly fine with netboot) or just CF loading in general that has a pretty bad success rate - well more so when I go from sandisk to another brand CF card

Thank you for the info. I will take a closer look later today.

I have had great success with: Lexar and Trancend.

I thought trancend was one of the ones that didn't play nice.

Lexar would be good, the problem with some of these cards is their price is off the roof haha

did you try entering the letter in upper-case?

yeah I tried both - but nothing..

I bet you if I try it again, it'll work lol - but I've now got 4x cards that behave exactly the same, you power it on, it just black screens. All my tests have been the same bin file so there's consistency, but the only thing consistent I've gotten is SanDisk CF cards seem to be favoured more than anything in my testing

Yeah, I haven't had any issues with CF loading using 512MB SanDisk cards.

@mR_CaESaR

The ones which don't work identify themselves as: SILICONSYSTEMS INC 512MB

The ones which work identify themselves as: STI Flash 7.3.0 and STI Flash 8.0.0

So your cards are in fact different even if they have the same label.

What kind of adapter are you using for the CF cards ?

I didn't even take notice of that until you just pointed it out.

I've since done more testing and these cards are unstable AF! The 3 cards that loaded yesterday no longer load properly (same bin and different bins, process remains the same, however, I didn't format). It'll go through the boot screen, go into a loading/checking memory loop and then error out with "this game is not acceptable by main board" and when that happens, the naomi doesn't appear to boot any working cards after unless I do an unplug, reseat and then load one of the SanDisk CF's in

The CF solution was supposed to be easy, I didn't realise how finicky and particular this solution is haha.

I'm using a generic USB card reader from ebay and also one I had from many years back. Do you think it could be the way it's written onto the CF card? I would've thought if it's "successfully written", then there'd be no issue unless there's an issue with the compatibility of the card

The original CF solution from SEGA used high quality industrial cards. Sadly now there are a lot of counterfeit CF cards around.

Sorry I meant: What kind of CF interface are you using on your NAOMI DIMM ?

I use CF on my NAOMI2, Triforce and Chihiro with no issues at all.

The most important part to check is that the NAOMI is powered properly. A NAOMI with DIMM uses a lot more power than with a cart.

Ahh sorry, misunderstood.

I'm using this one https://www.arcade-projects.com/threads/sega-naomi-dimm-adapter.20079/

Naomi is definitely powered properly, I can almost replicate the issue all the time after a bad load. Netdimm works perfectly fine. It's the particular cards that causes it to do a bad load and causes a black screen and nothing will work after that - even the sandisk cards. The moment I reseat the dimm and load the sandisk card, it'll boot first go.

What CF interface do you use? Mitsu's ones? Tailsnic's ones or something you made yourself?

Thanks. I've got 5x working SanDisk's and it works all the time no issue. I might try that transcend as a last resort.

I don't need to have the whole Naomi library on hand, I've already got a net dimm setup, I just really wanted to try the cf solution.

That sega cf box would be nice to have :)

Hi guys. So I'm looking to buy a laptop to start making my own CF cards for my own use. I know we need to obtain the 4 digit keys for each card. Would a Dell Latitude D610 notebook with Windows XP PRO work? I will also have a CF adapter.
