OpenJVS Hat Update - 11th January 2021

Hope everyones doing well, @RedOne and I are almost ready to send the boards off to the manufacturers however we've got one small issue that we'd like to gauge everyone's thoughts on first.

We are proposing that the OpenJVS Hat will ONLY support a Raspberry Pi 4 from factory.

Due to hardware restrictions of the older Raspberry Pis, an issue arises where if JVS communication is sent while the Pi is starting up it forces the Pi into it's bootloader mode where it will get stuck and won't successfully start up. Because of this, we will manufacturer the boards to only support a Raspberry Pi 4 from factory, which has multiple serial connections allowing us to use one that isn't involved in the Pi's bootup process.

Currently the ability to swap compatibility to support a Raspberry Pi 2 or 3 will require desoldering and soldering a small part (0 Ohm SMD resistor) of the board and a configuration change in the OpenJVS software. This means basic soldering equipment and skill will be required, if you'd like to make the board work with an older version of the Raspberry Pi. It is worth noting that in this compatability mode, any on board bluetooth capabilities of the Raspberry Pi will not function.

An alternative is to add easy to use jumpers on the board to facilitate this compability swap, however this would put the board cost up and add to components that may eventually fail with corrosion of the jumper surface. This would also add an extra potential problem with troubleshooting.

What is everyones thoughs on this? Do you accept that it will only work with a Raspberry Pi 4 from factory and that solering is required to swap to compability mode, or would you prefer the board cost to be higher and include jumpers?

Once we've got this sorted out I will send a Google form to everyone with the final price and those who are still interested can fill in their shipping details.

I am not that happy with the RPI4, it has a tendency of running warm and putting a HAT on it will most likely obstruct the cooling fins ?

If you need the PI to boot fully before enabling JVS why don't you use a GPIO to enable the RS485 transceiver or line ?

With an explicit enable this makes the whole design more future proof and there is no need to desolder anything.

How much extra cost are we talking for the board cost and the jumpers? I'm personally fine with only pi4 compatibility but if it's not a ton more overall then it would be nice to have that option.
 
Just found this and read through every post. Congratulations on such a great project and all the progress made! Very interested in the final outcome and product. I personally have RPI3's but would happily purchase and mod if needed. Many thanks
 
Thanks for the kind words @Robjab - we've emailed the manufacturers and so are waiting on a quote for the hats. Will update everyone when they're ready!
 
Interested in one of these boards as well, so please put me down for one. I'm okay with whichever PI it ends up supporting.
 
Question: I’m not sure if you mentioned it, but will this work with Namco System 2X6 shooting and racing games? I’m still super interested playing Time Crisis 3 on an LCD panel. Could this also work on Namco System 22/23 games as well?

Would the basic "Raspberry Pi 4 2GB" model be the right model for this OpenJVS Hat kit or would it need more ram?

Any new updates on the progress of this project you can share?
 
@Franco23444 It should work fine with Namco System 2X6, although you may have to fiddle around with some of the IO definitions and mappings for the shooting games to get the calibration right. I've played Time Crisis 2 with OpenJVS (video is above somewhere). You have to make your own cable as the System 22 has a non standard JVS cable, and again getting the calibration right is sometimes tricky so you might need to play with scaling etc.

@aoiddr Yep the 2GB model will be just fine, OpenJVS isn't very CPU/ram intensive at all, the only reason the Pi4 is reccomended is thats the only Pi with enough UARTS to support both JVS + Bluetooth + RS232 (for FFB / Rideboards / Card readers) at the same time. A Pi 2/3 will work as well, but won't be able to run the RS232 connection and bluetooth has to be turned off.

In terms of updates, we've got the boards and my batch of 25 has been tested and works. I'm waiting on my partner to test his, and then we will contact everyone who's expressed interest with a sign up form.

Price is going to be 40 euros per unit, not including shipping. If you add that to the price of a Raspberry Pi 4 for about 40 euros, then the entire setup is 80 euros which we think is resonable for an IO board with this level of flexibility.

I'll be sending the form out in the next week or so, so if people are still interested they can submit their address / email and then I will email everyone individually for payment.
