What's new

Home Arcade System

The store is live now!

For the HAS V5.1, I’ve switched to the HD-15 video out port, moving on from the trusty 8-pin mini DIN (RIP), since so many users bought some form of an 8-pin mini DIN to HD-15 adapter.

There's also a larger, 1.3" OLED display installed now.

I hope you like the updates in this release :) Thank you!

Edit: @trev1976 - Not anytime soon, I'm afraid. The pre-order list doesn’t justify producing even a small batch of RECO PCBs.
HD15 should be the go to connector, never really liked 8pin mini din, all of the cables now are made in HD15 (eg from retrotink etc).

I haven't tested the retrotink HD-15 cable. The pinout is right, but the cable sets the impedance with a 470R series resistor - just like the HAS, so the total resistance will be 940R, and the resulting CSync will be low, at around ~0.37Vp-p; should be fine, though (and very safe).

I went ahead and ordered the RetroTink cable to try, figured it would be good to have in any case. I didn't realize the HAS's already had 470ohm on their sync output. The 8 pin mini DIN Retro Access scart cable I've got has 470 ohm on the cable, and it works fine with my HAS 5.0, so hopefully will be the case with the Retrotink cable and HAS 5.1.

But this got me thinking, what kind of cables have people here been using? Because I never found many 8 pin mini din SCART cables, and none that I saw were unbuffered. And I don't see many HD-15 SCART cables out there either. Or is it just no one here uses SCART cables, and I'm the odd duck in the bunch?

I think there are majorily two use cases of scart cables with HAS, one with a scart switch and second with a RGB2COMP (to use with consumer CRTs). I believe most people use the HAS with PVMs/BVMs so HD15 to BNC is sufficient in these cases.

I use HAS with Retro Access SCART cables for an RGB-modded JVC, a component JVC (with RGB2COMP), and occasionally a flat panel with RT5X or RT4K. I was worried about ordering more Retro Access cables for a while, but it looks like Retro Access has a new lease on life. Retro Gaming Cables (UK) has worked great, too.

I don't use HD15 or BNC unless forced to. If I had a choice, I would prefer mini-DIN 9 since the console modding world seems to have landed on that as the connector of choice for 240p. I have a ton of those lying around.

I go from HAS to SCART switch to Retrotink. I guess I thought that would be a more common configuration here. Of course, being arcade forums, I would assume crts in cabinets and such, but also figured a number of folks would have tinks, ossc's, etc with modern displays for convenience. It seems I am the odd duck out.

These mini dins are confusing, now which one is 9 pin one, is that genesis or sega saturn?
10 pin mini din is saturn, 9 pin mini din is genesis model 2, 8 pin mini din is the old HAS and also some older NES RGB mods. I'm not sure what else uses the 8 pin mini because the HAS was my first encounter with it. The Genesis model 1 uses a larger 8 pin DIN (similar to the Neo Geo AES, but the Genesis is a 262 degree 8 pin whereas the Neo Geo is 270 degree).

I'm sure this isn't comprehensive, but AFAIK:

Mini-DIN 8
  • XRGB Framemeister
  • Atari 2600 2600RGB
  • Etim's NES RGB
  • Etim's GGTV
  • Mobius Strip CD-i RGB (choice of 8 or 9)
  • BlackDogTech 3DO RGB (choice of 8 or 9)
  • HAS supergun (AFAIK 4.x-5.0)
  • Minigun supergun (choice of 8 or 9)

Mini-DIN 9
  • Genesis 2 & 3, Nomad
  • RetroHQ 7800 GameDrive for Atari 7800
  • Insurrection Sparkplug for PC Engine
  • Krikzz EDFX for PC Engine
  • TerraOnion Super HD System 3 Pro for PC Engine
  • Humble Bazooka Jaguar AIOA
  • OpenMVS
  • Mobius Strip CD-i RGB (choice of 8 or 9)
  • BlackDogTech 3DO RGB (choice of 8 or 9)
  • Common plug for HD Retrovision (pigtail adapters for SMS, Saturn, PS1)
  • Minigun supergun (choice of 8 or 9)

Mini-DIN 10
  • Saturn
  • MisterAddons IO Analog Pro
  • Retro Remake SuperStation

Anyway, I don't want to be an e-beggar clamoring for features that benefit me. Just chiming in to say you're not alone. Whatever makes sense for RGB to choose, there are usually adapters.

Of course. I wasn't requesting any features with respect to the HAS. Just curious what people here were using for cables since TTL level SCART cables are not the norm in places I've looked. Hopefully once Retro Access is back up and running they'll be able to accommodate with some custom builds.

I think I'm in the same boat. I would love to buy new HAS but at the moment I don't know which cable I need to get to connect it to my gScart switch setup. Before it was easy to find a right cable :(

I use a gscart as well. And interestingly what I learned in this thread just recently is even on my old HAS, I was apparently using a non-ideal cable since both the 5.0 and the cable had 470ohm on the sync line. But it did work fine as far as I could tell, so hoping for the same with the Retrotink cable. I'd say if you want a 5.1, go ahead and grab one. The cable part is just a small obstacle we'll find a way around.

I'm interested to know if this works.

With HAS ver. 3.x - 4.2 I ordered a few 8pin mini din -> SCART cables from Retro Access forever ago. I still use this combo to play everything today.

If I were to purchase the new HAS, I'm going to have to re-arrange my setup and re-incorporate this expansion card. It worked well with my other arcade systems and I imagine it'd be fine here as well; plug and go pretty much.

I tested the Retrotink HD15-SCART cable with the HAS 5.1 and it appears to have issues. The color signals randomly switch on and off due to the high resistance. CSync seems to be fine so the image is stable, the tint just changes randomly as the RGB lines drop out.

The Retrotink HD15 to HD15 works perfectly.

Is the Csync on the HAS set to TTL?

I should have the Retrotink HD15-SCART on Monday and will check it on my end.

Actually, I think I may have been the problem. I tested it several times on one board and had the issue, but I tested a couple more and had none. I went back to the first board and it seems to be working fine now. Could be the board or maybe I didn't have the HD15 side fully secured. Its a stiff cable. So it was probably operator error on my part.

Yes, I do have Csync set to TTL.

Hello RGB, a feature suggestion for the next version: would it be possible to include a H and V pos shifter into HAS? That's the only extra item I have in between my HAS and the tv so I can centre the image on the consumer grade tv.
that would be cool for sure but meanwhile getting an extron rgb rxi interface in between HAS and TV can do that.

I tested the RetroTink HD15 to SCART cable, and it works perfectly. I dig the quality and look of this cable :)

EU-based users should note that the cable doesn't carry the voltage needed to switch the TV to RGB mode.
