They are usually named as knightsh.zip (with "h" at the end)

it's in hbmame and knights is the parent, so it's cps1 hardware and just new program code (22 and 23 roms). I forget how to assemble a rom for the multi but I could build the file. at that point he could just add a new folder for it, right? been a while since I set up my cps1 so I sort of forget.

Yes, if the game runs on CPS1 Hardware, you can just take all the roms from the parent romset and replace only the ones corresponding to program ROM.
