Soon getting home a supposedly PAL Neo Geo AES unit, that I am wondering if its possible to convert it to NTSC?

bottom sticker says NEO-AEC 90A (S/N in 30k range)

According to the available schematics, seems like only the 2 crystals and a capacitor differs, but that might be depending on board revision?

Anyone done this before? Or should I just try and trade it for a JAP/US AES instead in case someone would prefer a PAL unmodded unit for some reason?

Do you really want to convert it to NTSC or 60Hz RGB, I modded a few back when the Neo Geo was current as most models in the UK were PAL rather than NTSC.

Do you have a jumper marked PAL, NTSC? Some models it’s as easy as moving a soldered jumper.

Well isn't all NTSC AES 60Hz? I am not sure what you mean by "NTSC or 60Hz RGB".. what's the difference?
RGB bypass mod is a must on some revs as far as I remember, but all units do have RGB support out of the box as well? Just different picture quality.

Also realized I probably should have started this thread in the Neo Geo AES / MVS section  is it possible to move it perhaps please?

*Thank you!*

When you mod a PAL 50Hz SNES or Neo Geo to 60 Hz it’s a PAL 60 mod, and usually pretty simple.

To change a PAL console to NTSC involves changing crystals and perhaps more but it can be done 👍

If you just want to play games at the proper speed with a RGB scart cable, the PAL 60 mod is perfect. 🤩 and often involves just moving a solder link.

This explains it better.

hmm but a "PAL 60Hz" mod seems to me that its not exact att the proper NTSC 60Hz speed, since the crystals arent changed?

You could well be right, that info wasn’t widely available back in 1992 when I modded a few Neo home systems.

Is it slightly slower than 60 Hz.

No, it's not.

The crystal is for the sub-carrier color. 3.58MHz for NTSC, 4.43MHz for PAL. There is absolutely no difference in speed. Just do the 60hz mod.
Oh, so I dont need to change the main crystal either?? (the 24Mhz one..)

A little bit wierd thou that the bottom sticker says only use PRO-POW ac adapter.. ain’t that one 5v ??

Case swaps are a thing. Was this modded to PAL?
this is not modded to PAL, it’s PAL originally and I want to mod it to 60hz

The sticker says NEO-AEC which google points me to be a EURO or US system.. even weirder almost

NEO-AEC and PRO-POW text on that label is contradicting

The "-PAL" is marked on the AC adapter, but not on the bottom of the console. After all, the console only cares what voltage it's getting, not what kind of mains you're using.

Here's an example PAL console:

https://www.neostore.com/PAL-220V-Neo-Geo-AES-console-system-boxed-p/569.htm

Again, the Firebrandx article insists that you need to look inside the console for the voltage regulator in order to be sure. The sticker on yours would suggest it's 5v, but the regulator inside tells us otherwise.

I'm not sure if "-AEC" consoles were ever marked with anything other than "PRO-POW" on the bottom. The trick of checking this to know the input voltage may not apply to non-Japanese consoles.

Hi!

I just recently acquired a Neo-Geo 3-6 off ebay. The console works mostly fine, however, I suspect it's a PAL console. I'm not trying to high jack this thread with my problems. But, I also don't see the point in starting a new one when I believe the issue is the same. Basically, the issues I'm having are mostly the same as the OP. Included below is the mobo and I noticed the wire/resistor for the chip/PAL 1 is gone. I have a few more pictures to share or could take more if needed.

I'm just trying to convert this to NTSC. Recommended parts and links would be greatly appreciated just to make sure I don't get the wrong items.

Thank you for your time and help that you can provide.
