The Definitive Guide to the System 16 Multi Kit

If the games are not booting at all then it's a problem with the program roms which are roms 1, 2, or 3. I'm willing to bet a trace has severed tho.

That's a v1 multi. That design had a flaw where a trace somewhere between rom 1 and 3 would break. All address lines between rom 1, 2, and 3 should connect. ( the same pin on each rom should connect with continuity.)

The v1.5 design does not have this issue.
So I started to track and then I found one trace that was not connecting, so I bridged it, then tested and it was not working.
Then tested again and found another trace that was not connecting anymore (while it was connecting the test before, but I guess by taking the multi out and putting it back in it damaged more the traces).
Bis repetita, bis repetita, I'm now at the fourth trace but now no games are even booting (even the ones that were originally working).

May I ask to return that multi and either you make sure to fix it or to replace it with a working one?

I should have said most data lines should connect between all three proram roms. A16, A17, A18, A19 and A20 should connect between roms 1 and 3 but not 2.

Does anyone have any labels with SEGA & S16 Multi written on them that I can use to cover my S16 multi IC's? If you do, shoot me a PM pls

Hi everyone, I finally got around to testing my s16 multi (thanks Mitsurugi and ShootTheCore!) and it booted to a black screen. I read through this thread and see that I need to get a new 68k cpu, since mine is encrypted. Someone posted a link on this thread as to where to get one but that link is broken for me. Can someone link me to a good dealer for these or should I find one on ebay? I found a few on there. Thanks again for everyone's help on this

arcadechips.com is my go-to.

Hi,

I got a Multi v1 with graphical issues. The GAL at U18 getting really hot, is this normal ?

Thanks for your help

That's the sign of a dead GAL. Was the GAL installed backwards at any point? If so, that's what fried it. Regardless, it should be replaced with a fresh GAL.

Thanks a lot for the help.

The board may have been over voltaged (does this verb exists ? :D ), so it's possible the gal had a bad time.
How to replace the gal ? I can program them but is the jed file available ?

Oh they are the same as original romboard ? Are you sure ?

The PLD is a GAL22V10 on the multi., a 24 pins device.
The original seems to be a GAL18V10, 20 pins device.

The chip on the multi is hot? Then no its not the same. I can get you a new one. Those v1 multis are problematic. They had a design flaw that we fixed with v2. Hopefully the gal is the only issue.
Yes, it almost blistering hot and causes graphical/sound issues.

I checked the addresses traces between rom 1/3. Also the traces that are next the borders of the pcb.
Is there other things to check on v1 ?

I check CC on this powered off GAL (multi unplugged from mother board).

Pins 3 and 24 are connected to VCC (normal for 24).
Pins 12 and 13 are connected to GND (normal for 12).
Pins 11 and 14 are connected.

Is anything wrong ?
