ATAPI/IDE ODE Testing

I vaguely recall someone asking before so I think I might have tested it? I'll give it another try anyway and see if there's anything obviously wrong

I can confirm I did have it working and playable. it was over 2-years ago now so any quirks/details beyond what's below allude me.

I can tell you it is a 15kHz only game and a 246 only game so you MUST have a normal 246. A 256 in 246+ mode will not work (I used a 246B when I tested). Similary dips must be set to 15kHz output.

I don't recall what I used for an IO board but it would have been tested on either the official JAMMA adapter and/or a Sega JVS JAMMA adapter.

The chd to bin/cue script I used would have been included in the bat file I provided ages ago.

Could it be some issues with SD cards? Some incompatibilities with certain SD cards? 🧐

Yep - when loading from CD you start seeing it load sectors off the disk into BUFFER, etc. Then the game starts. Off the ODE - it just dies right there.

It sounds like a possible problem with the disc image you're using. Perhaps a bad extract from chdman or wrong version used?

have you tried re-ripping the working CD you burned to create the image for the ODE?

Isn't the software looking for some special ATA commands which are only supported on some drives ?

I think that is exactly what’s happening. Some older drives I own support the game. The “newest” dvd drive I own that supports the game and others is the LG GSA-H55N or LG GSA-H42N. I have noticed that the disc “spins” quite fast.

The other thing I noticed with the drive that works is that it spins up right upon bootup of the 246 - the other drives I have wait longer to start spin up.

Maybe our Douglas Adams fan @electric_monk :D can enable logging to see if he is receiving commands which are unhandled ?
