Hey everyone!

I’ve been exploring the idea of producing a brand-new, injection-molded plastic enclosure for Capcom CPS-1 arcade boards, inspired by the original Capcom cases, particularly the one used for Varth: Operation Thunderstorm.

The goal is to create a high-quality, durable, universal CPS-1 case capable of housing both the long and short board revisions, while maintaining that authentic Capcom arcade aesthetic.

This would not be a simple 3D-printed enclosure. The intention is to manufacture these cases using professional plastic injection molding, similar to how the original Capcom cases were produced.

THE CONCEPT

The current idea is to develop a universal enclosure with features such as:

  • Universal Compatibility: One case designed to accommodate both long and short CPS-1 board configurations, potentially using interchangeable internal mounting brackets.
  • Original Capcom-Inspired Design: Taking inspiration from the original Varth enclosure while incorporating modern improvements.
  • Improved Ventilation: Properly positioned ventilation openings to help with airflow and heat dissipation.
  • Optional Cooling Fan: Exploring the possibility of incorporating a fan mount for additional cooling.
  • Secure PCB Mounting: Proper internal mounting points to safely accommodate the CPS-1 board stack.
  • JAMMA Accessibility: Ensuring the connector remains properly positioned and accessible.
  • Authentic Appearance: A clean, professional finish that complements original Capcom hardware.

The design is NOT limited to the original Varth enclosure. I simply believe it’s a great starting point and likely a design many collectors would appreciate.

I’m completely open to changes, improvements, or even an entirely different design if the community feels there’s a better approach.

CURRENT PROJECT STATUS

This project is still in the early research and concept phase.

There are many technical details that need to be researched, tested, and finalized before moving forward.

Injection molding requires a substantial upfront investment, particularly when it comes to designing and manufacturing the molds themselves.

Before committing to that investment, I’d like to better understand whether there’s enough interest within the arcade community to make this project financially feasible.

COMMUNITY INTEREST & PRICING

This is where I’d really appreciate everyone’s input.

1. Would you be interested in purchasing a professionally injection-molded CPS-1 case?

2. What would you realistically be willing to pay for one?
  • $100–$125
  • $125–$150
  • $150+

3. How many cases would you potentially purchase?

One for your favorite CPS-1 game? Or several to protect your collection?

4. What features would you consider absolutely essential?

Are there specific design elements, mounting solutions, ventilation requirements, or other improvements you’d like to see?

5. Would anyone be interested in helping with the project?

I’m also looking to connect with anyone who might be willing to contribute in any way, whether through:

  • CAD design or 3D modeling
  • Injection molding or manufacturing experience
  • CPS-1 hardware knowledge and measurements
  • Prototyping and compatibility testing
  • General suggestions, feedback, or other forms of assistance

Any contribution, big or small, would be greatly appreciated.

THE GOAL

Ultimately, I’d love to create something that the arcade community can be proud of.

A case that not only protects these increasingly valuable CPS-1 boards but also gives them the professional appearance and protection they deserve.

I’m not looking to rush this project. I want to do the research, understand the costs, gather feedback, and determine whether there’s enough demand to move forward.

The images attached are early concept renders only and do not represent a finalized product.

If there’s enough interest, I’d love to explore taking this project from concept to reality.

So, what do you guys think? Would you buy one? What would you pay? And what would you change or improve?

Looking forward to hearing everyone’s thoughts, suggestions, and ideas!

THE PHOTO ATTACHED IS AN AI CREATED IMAGE JUST TO GET A VISUAL REPRESENTATION OF THE IDEA AND NOT THE FINAL CONCEPT.

Thanks, everyone!

So what exactly will you be doing if you intend to bring this project to fruition?

Do you have experience in project management, or any meaningful ability of the required skillset needed (CAD design, understanding of injection molding, cost estimation, etc)? Have you ever attempted any project before, successful or not, that was similar in nature that involved multiple people?

From the text you wrote(?), what you're asking for in terms of contribution would be just about everything the project needs to move at all.

I apologize if this sounds overly critical, but without more clarity on this project, at best this sounds like an inexperienced Kickstarter dream with even less accountability, and at worst an attempt at using AI to beg people to do a bunch of work for them, rather than a project to be taken seriously.

No shade if you don't have any experience on this undertaking by the way, as long as you're forthcoming about it and the risks it will involve as a result.

The impetus for this could be as simple as "Hey I really want this to happen, and I'm willing to dump money into this. Who's with me?"

Again, more clarity in your role for this project would help a lot.

I appreciate your feedback, and I understand where you’re coming from.

To answer your question directly, no, I’ve never attempted a project of this nature before, nor am I claiming to be an expert in CAD design, injection molding, or even project management.

What I do have is a genuine passion for arcade hardware, particularly Capcom’s CPS systems, and the willingness to personally fund this endeavor 100% if it proves feasible. Some of the games I want in cases are Captain Commando, King of Dragons, Final Fight, Knights of Round to name a few.

My intention would be to take responsibility for financing, organizing, and coordinating the project, working alongside professionals with the necessary expertise. I’m certainly not expecting anyone to do the work for me, much less for free.

While I may not have experience with a project like this, I’m no stranger to managing responsibilities, coordinating with people, and seeing things through. And I can assure you that if the interest is there and I’m given the opportunity, I would go above and beyond to bring this project to life.

The whole purpose of reaching out to the community was to gauge interest, gather feedback, and potentially connect with knowledgeable individuals who might be interested in contributing their expertise.

I’m not asking for donations, launching a Kickstarter, or making promises about something that doesn’t exist yet. I’m simply exploring whether an idea I’m passionate about could become a reality.

I fully understand that a project like this requires considerable time, effort, and financial investment. That’s exactly why I’m taking the time to research it before making any commitments.

I respect your skepticism, and I welcome constructive criticism. But I also believe that just because someone hasn’t done something before doesn’t mean they shouldn’t try.

Everyone has to start somewhere, and if there’s enough community interest to make this worthwhile, I’m willing to put in the work and investment necessary to give it a real chance.
