Does Anyone Own a Gundhara PCB?

say ... does your Downtown board have that "DT0001" engraved on it?! or it's just me?! (millions!!)

I don't believe mine dose ... Yours is one of a kind :D

Lets start with pictures, sorry they are in reverse order, quadrants then full board. To look at it correctly, start with the final picture and go up!

1. is that the sub board sits on top of U42 sharing it's pins
Maybe? Can you tell from the pic? I tried to wiggle it off, but couldn't do it.

2. is that there is a single fly wire from that sub-board going to U41 Pin 7
Yes (image 0338 )

3. that the NEC UPD71054 chip (U121) has pin 11 disconnected from the PCB and tied to 5V through the jumper wire on Pin 24
I don't think so (image 0347)

I'll take a look at the jumpers after dinner!

Thanks so much
For 1 it looks like its partially socketed and partially soldered and the original chip in that location is removed rather than piggybacked... I'll have to work out what that chip does and why they were able to remove it.

For 3 it does look like pin 11 is cut and then jumped to pin 24 (5v pin) but I can't tell for sure from the angle.

I should be able to work out the jumpers from these awesome pics!

I'm going to save you time looking all over my pictures, so If you have a (saved) second, can you swing by there and see if you can help? I have zero idea how to use this cheap DMM/Scope combo I picked up and I don't have that $$$$ logic analyzer that Buffi mentions, but even if I did, I have no idea how to use it to get the number's he mentions.

Oh, one more thing. Despite the hand-made kick harness, my version is the Japanese 2 button version. I think you're supposed to be able to switch regions with the dips, but my game has a problem starting (takes some resets and an increase in 5v) and moving the dips causes the crash to persists. So I can't really check it.

to be clear it's this Pin that I suspect has been cut:

it's actually not controlled by DIPs by by jumper JP6 near the JAMMA edge.

or at least that's what controls it on the production release, I don't know for sure if the prototype is the same.

that Jumper does also control the region setting for some other games too like Mad Shark and Zing Zing Zip, though on those others all it really does is change the title screen.

I'm bumping this bad boy. Did you need me to see if that pin is cut on that chip? I can't tell with my poor vision, but I can get the DMM out and listen for a beep!

I'm 99% confident it is but I wouldn't say no to 100% confidence :D

ok, maybe it's time to open up about where this thread has gone in the background. What started as me wanting to figure out how to convert Zombie Raid into Gundhara has evolved in making a multi for this system.

First of all, this is is super complex since there are differences in the hardware for just about every game. it's not like CPS2 or system 16 where there is a definitive "system" instead every game needs adjustments to the hardware to make work.

Also to temper expectations I will note that system 16 is wrong about the game list. they lumped 3 or 4 different hardware "systems" together that have some similarities but aren't really the same.

There is the "Downtown" hardware (PO-045) based games:
  • Arbalester
  • DownTown
  • Caliber 50
  • Meta Fox
  • Thundercade / Twin Formation
  • Twin Eagle
  • U.S. Classic
^theres probably a future multi there, but I'm not working on it right now.

Then there is what call the "4-chip" hardware which includes:
  • Blandia
  • Crazy Fight
  • Daioh
  • Eight Forces
  • Extreme Downhill
  • Gundhara
  • J.J.Squawkers
  • Mad Shark
  • Magical Speed
  • Masked Riders Club Battle Race
  • Mobile Suit Gundam
  • Oishii Puzzle
  • Rezon
  • Sokonuke Taisen Game
  • Ultra Toukon Densetsu
  • War Of Aero
  • Zombie Raid
  • Zing Zing Zip

then you have a bunch of weird stuff where the hardware borrows bits and pieces from the Downtown hardware and the 4-chip hardware but isn't really completely compatible with either of them. These include:
  • Real Mahjong Gold Yumehai
  • Pro Mahjong Kiwame
  • Orbs
  • Kero Kero Keroppi no Issyoni Asobou
  • The Roulette
  • Wiggie Waggie
  • Super Bar
  • Thunder & Lightning
  • Block Carnival
  • Pairs Love
  • Wit's
  • Castle of Dragon/Dragon Unit
  • Strike Gunner S.T.G
  • Quiz Kokology
  • Quiz Kokology 2
  • Jockey Club
  • International Toote
  • Ultraman Club
  • SD Gundam Neo Battling
  • Athena no Hatena?
  • Krazy Bowl

I'm working on the 4-chip hardware and have 11 out of the 18 games functioning.
Right now I have a pretty banging list to make a 8-in-1 multi, it could be expanded to a 16-in-1 but it's just a matter of whether it's worth the effort. for the particular games to be added, as each one takes weeks of work to figure out.
  1. Daioh - Fully working
  2. Eight Forces - Fully working
  3. Gundhara - Fully working
  4. J.J.Squawkers - Fully working
  5. Mad Shark - Fully working
  6. War Of Aero - Fully working
  7. Zing Zing Zip - Fully working
  8. Rezon - Fully working on 3 of the 4 donors, not yet sure why it doesn't work on the last donor.
  9. Sokonuke Taisen Game - 99.9% working, just need to sort out a clock speed issue.
  10. Extreme Downhill - Not attempted but theoretically is identical to Sokonuke Taisen Game so hopeful that it would be an easy lift
  11. Masked Riders Club Battle Race - Have made an attempt but can't get running, unsure what's wrong
  12. Oishii Puzzle - Have made an attempt but can't get running, unsure what's wrong
  13. Magical Speed - Have not attempted and unsure of the effort required
  14. Blandia - Technically working as a conversion but would require some heavy modifications to the multi, debating if it's worth it
  15. Mobile Suit Gundam - Have not attempted, I need more info but suspect it's similar to Blandia in the amount of modifications to the multi to get working
  16. Zombie Raid - Technically working as a conversion but would require some heavy modifications to the multi, debating if it's worth it
  17. Crazy Fight - Not attempted, seems like it would require a ton of work to get working and a lot of modifications to the multi to support
  18. Ultra Toukon Densetsu - Likely not possible as it uses a bunch of special audio hardware. could maybe get it working with missing sounds but probably not worth it.
Some teasers

So here are the 3 options I'm faced with:
1. move forward and finish up the hardware design as is and release as an 8-in-1 (probably could be released this year)
2. release the hardware with a few extra empty slots empty (probably could be released this year but will likely be about $80 more expensive) and hope that I or others can expand the list to 12 or 13 later
3. keep crunching away at getting all or most games working delaying this a couple of years and ballooning the cost a few hundred bucks.

Let me know what option people think is best.

Awesome work! So for the "4-chip", I would assume that any of the pcb's in this list would be acceptable candidates for a multi if it were based on the 4-chip?

Confirmed Donor Boards:
  • PO-078A (used by Blandia)
  • PO-079A (used by Eight Forces and Zing Zing Zip)
  • PO-122A (used by Zombie Raid)

Potential Donor Boards (theorize they'd work but have not confirmed)
  • PO-122B (used by Zombie Raid) <- a slight variation on the other board, I have one to test/confirm
  • PO-092A (used by Daioh)
  • PO-072-2 (used by Prototypes) <- doubt anyone will use this due to rarity
  • PO-120A (used by Gundhra) <- doubt anyone will use this due to rarity
  • 93111A (used by War of Aero and JJ Squawkers) <- doubt anyone will use this due to rarity

These are some of the best "little known" arcade games in existence, in my opinion. Mad Shark is such an amazing spiritual successor to Raiden DX, and that's just scratching the surface. I'd love to have a multi for this system, especially to better preserve the originals.

Incredible work.
