Home Arcade System

Hey @djsheep,

Thanks very much for your input on this.

Have you tried both ports of your TV? Quickly skimming the manual for your unit, only Port 1 is RGB capable.

I've only tried the same RGB scart socket in my TV, which is the same one I always use.

Connect directly from HAS to your TV and not through your SCART switch.

Yes:

I've tried the Computer Shack cable directly into my TV and I still had no image.

TTL should be off for a consumer TV and sounds like you’ve toggled the raw CSYNC and LPF settings correctly, flip between them with no board connected and then plug in a try. Do not adjust with game attached.

Ah ha, OK, I have not tried this, will do shortly. I have only tried toggling on/ off whilst the HAS is powered on.

Photo below shows DIP and their expected positions for AW.

Kind thanks, buddy. Yes, I am aware of this.

Neo Geo will show crosshatch with no cart attached.

Yes, thank you, I was aware that I should still see something with no cart inside my MV2F.

Can you try another TV or 15k RGB capable screen.

Unfortunately not, I recently sold my Ma's lovely Sony FD Trinitron KD-28D11U. And I did have an old monitor with scart not too long ago tha I used to keep around as a spare. But I had leant this to my brother, the stand broke and I said he could chuck it. I didn't think I would ever need it again, Sod's Law!

Does 15k output work on your 31k display? Try that and report back.

Hmm.. do you mean via the Atomiswave's VGA out? I think so, I will try and report back.

Thanks ever so much.

Much warmth and well wishes to you,

fallinlight

OK, @djsheep, so I tried toggling TTL both on and off then saving the setting, without the board connected, then plugging the board back in, powering on, both with Atomiswave Multi and without, but still no image.

I tried the other scart in my TV and no image.

Also, if it matters, the voltage reading on the HAS is 5.02 with TTL on and 5.01 with it off, with the AW + Multi powered on and plugged in to my TV. Could it be that the voltage needs to be a bit higher for my TV VS my LCD monitor and 31 kHz VGA out?

15 kHz (as well as 31 kHz) output on my LCD monitor works with from the VGA from the Atomiswave using a standard VGA to VGA cable.

15 kHz output works with TTL on from the HAS (I toggled TTL on/ off whilst the AW was connected an powered on and got a black screen with TTL off) with the same VGA to VGA cable into my LCD monitor. I haven't tried 31 kHz this way from the HAS, as I am not sure that is safe.

Test 15k out of the HAS with SCART on your LCD monitor if possible? If two cables are exhibiting this problem. I'm going to guess your TV isn't picking up the signal for whatever reason.

@RGB any ideas?

Thanks. Yes, that is what I meant above: 15 kHz works with my VGA to VGA cable from the HAS into my LCD monitor, dj:

Yes, it is odd...

Just in case it matters, I get a 'bump'/ quick flicker of the screen when powering on/ off and toggling TTL on/ off with my TV, that is all. But absolutely no video/ image at any point is shown. And again, sound works with my Atomiswave with the RetroTink cable with the audio jack plugged into the HAS.

It's odd. Can you check the settings on your TV? That's all I can think of for the time being until others chime in.

Page 20 of your TV's manual (https://www.manualslib.com/manual/3292833/Sony-Trinitron-Kv-21x5u.html?page=20#manual) shows the specific modes to use RGB, just checking you are on the right input and other inputs are not populated or auto switching?

It is uncommon, but sometimes some screens just won't play nicely with arcade hardware regardless how much you try.

Thanks dj, I did try Googling my TV, aye. I will check the manual.

I have tried both scarts, remember. And I am using the right socket for RGB, there is only one that has RGB, the other does not, as far as I know, as none of my retro video game consoles work with RGB in the other socket - I never use it.

No other inputs are populated. And nothing ever autoswitches on my TV. And my Bandridge scart switcher is a manual switcher, not automatic.

Thanks for all of your support.

The last thing I can think of trying is the RetroTink scart directly in to the TV, I will try this shortly. I tried this with the MiSTer Computer Shack cable already.

Try follow the manual and make sure it's on the right input... the little rectangle with the three dots.

And yes, try the RetroDick cable. That one has been confirmed as working.

Did you follow the instructions in the manual with your remote to cycle the inputs to make sure you are on the right one?

This is the last thing I can think of and will be my last reply and attempt at helping; will await for others to chime in hopefully with more insight :)

Yes, I have tried this, dj, thank you. But I know which is the right one by eye off what shows up on the screen ('AV 1').

Thanks again, that is OK, I think we together have now exhausted all troubleshooting steps.

Once again. If you follow the manual I posted, there’s two states for AV1. One for regular composite and another for RGB.

And two states for AV2, composite and s-video.

Ah, I see, I may have misunderstood you! Let me try flicking the channels once again then. Also please excuse if I miss something, and I tend to take longer to absorb and retain information because I am dyslexic.

Re. No image from HAS V5.1 into Sony Trinitron KV-21X5U Consumer CRT TV

Hello,

I hope you are all well. I can't get an image from my HAS V5.1 into my Sony Trinitron with my 2x Atomiswave boards, or MV2F. This is my first arcade gaming setup. I do have sound with my Atomiswave, though. I don't have any games to test with my MV2F. I've tried both the 'MiSTer FPGA' RGB cable from Retro Computer Shack and a RetroTink RGB cable that arrived today. I also can't get video from my MVF2 (I've only tried that board with my Retro Computer Shack cable).

A listing for the MiSTer RGB cable which has detail about the wiring and spec:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/255117620498

The RetroTink cable is probably more widely known/ used and was recommended by Bob at RetroRGB for the HAS.

I have the following chain:

VGA one end into the HAS and scart the other, into my Bandridge 5 Way Scart Switcher, then into my Sony Trinitron 21X5U. I've tried the Computer Shack cable directly into my TV and I still had no image. Everything is as you would expect, PSU plugged in and I had the Saturn 2P adapter plugged in with a Saturn controller.

I had the DIP switch on the Atomiswave set to 15 kHz (up), as my Trinitron can't accept 31 kHz.

I've tried reading the HAS manual and Googling but I am still stumped. I've tried toggling CSYNC TTL and Raw CSYNC and LPF check boxes on/ offf.

The Computer Shack and Tink cables have the CSYNC signal on pin 20 of the scart plug, with a 470 Ohm resistor for attenuation, which is what I understand is needed.

Big P chimed in and said, "The 470ohm resistor may be causing a slightly week signal as I am pretty sure the HAS is already attenuated but it should still work".

VGA out from the HAS into my LCD monitor works fine with the AW dip set to 31 kHz, albeit at default settings the image is dimmer and less punchy compared to the VGA out from the AW board directly.

I hope I've covered all of the details you might need to help me out with this and thank you in advance for reading this. If anyone can suggest anything, or knows what might the issue might be, I would gratefully appreciate it.

Kind thanks,

fallinlight
Both of these cables don't carry +5V needed to set the TV to RGB Scart mode. In the Retro Computer Shack cable description it says "you will need to manually select the scart input on the tv to use this cable". Please try this, but not every TV set allows for something like that (eg, they allow you to go into the AV mode, but will default to Composite Video/S-Video input if no voltage is present on pins 8/16 of the Scart).

Hi bud,

Thanks for your input with this. I see. Well, as per my previous posts, I've already manually tried flicking through/ selecting all inputs on my TV. And again, I think this includes both the RGB and composite inputs for the RGB scart 1, that djsheep pointed out to me (https://www.arcade-projects.com/threads/home-arcade-system.332/post-484083).

As for manually selecting scart inputs, I always have to do this for all of my games consoles.

So, with that already attempted, do you reckon that my TV simply can't accept RGB from an arcade board? IF not, do you have a technical explanation/ theory for this, RGB?

I really wanted to use this TV with my arcade boards and I can't afford a PVM/ BVM right now. A fellow forum friend did suggest this, or an older HAS with composite/ S-Video adapter as an option. But I really didn't want to sacrifice on image quality. But at this stage, I am thinking I simply will have to.

I do also have Big P's Advanced Minigun 2.5 but I don't have the Genesis 2 Scart from RGC. I decided not to buy it, at least yet, as I expected to just use my HAS instead. Do you think the Minigun won't work either, since the HAS does not?

The manual override may still not work without power on Scart pins 8/16, but to double-check, try again, making sure the CSync on the HAS is set to TTL.

Game consoles work because their respective Scart cables wire power on pins 8/16 of the Scart. The Atomiswave should display just fine on your TV; it doesn't use an odd refresh rate, so it's not a matter of a compatibility issue.
