MVS MV1B/1C battery replacement

Update, after a 24-hour charge on a brand new LiR2032 it was able to hold the bios settings 2 hours after powering off. Today, after 18 hours being powered off, the bios settings reset again.

I have another brand new LiR 2032 that I charged in the console for about 9 hours and removed and have been checking the voltage daily. It seems to sit at 3.77V which is the same as when it was pulled from the console immediately following the 9-hour charge.

Any thoughts?
Some people have had issues after replacing the battery with the mvs chewing through cr2023's. I wonder if maybe this is a similar thing. I haven't looked into it as my mv1b doesn't appear to have this issue but I am sure someone around here has.
 
Sorry I am late to the party. I had been thinking about battery replacement for months. I have gone a different route using a super cap. Over the last few years I have had a few different caps soldered in place of the battery and finally settled on one. It appears to get me at least 3 months without loosing soft dips, but is designed for pcb mounting and has short legs, so I designed a pcb to solder in place of the battery. I just opened a thread to test interest, hopefully this solves some of these issues. Removing a resistor or cutting a trace seemed unsatisfactory to me and the lithium battery route would probably be ok but to make it neat you still need to solder something in, options are good and hopefully this gives people another one.
Do you have a link to this thread? Unfortunately both the LiR-2032 and ML-2032 both fail to hold the settings for more than half a day on my MV-1B. Maybe my charge circuit sucks.

It is based on a similar design I made for old 486 bios batteries., from an original design by scrapcomputing. Without looking in detail at the charging circuit of the MVS it looks like it will achieve the desired result there also. My question is... Good idea? Bad Idea?

Well, I’m not smart enough to know by looking at it, but if it works and is safe then yes it is a great idea and I’ll take 3.
 
I have tested this off board and it appears to function as expected I'll get a few boards printed for a little longer term testing before I 100% decide that is a good solution.
 
I’d buy one from you if you end up making them available for sale. What an elegantly simple solution. I hate losing my high scores after days of unuse!
 
I have ordered the mini pcb and I'll put one together and run it I'm my cab for a bit when they arrive. If I am happy nothing unexpected happens I'll make up a few for anyone interested and likely open source the pcb gerbers.

I'm having the same problem, everything is receiving the 3.3v but after a couple days the CR2032 is gone, 0 volts.
I replaced the 62256 memories, the problem persists. So I replaced the LS and the clock chip, let's see if it holds charge now.
 
It is most likely an issue with one of the smd caps which once they die can allow for a constant 3.3v draw from the battery. From memory it's c3 but it's on the bottom of the board in the back up section

Oh wow! Thank you. I've been scratching my head all day over this.

I was happy to get the coin cell CR2032 working (or so I thought...), however I also noticed that the battery completely drained overnight which seemed odd.

Using an ESR meter, and a different MV1B, I measured (in curcuit), both C2 and C3. Probably not the most reliable measurements but here we go :

C2 (1.9V) 26pF
C3 (3.13V) 27pF

I actually measured 3 different MV1B and the numbers were very similar.

But on the unit I wanted to do the coin cell mod on, of course both C2 and C3 are faulty.

I would strongly prefer to order new parts instead of stealing from my other boards. I can't for the life of me find a parts list for the MV1B. Does anybody know what replacements would be safe to buy?

After almost 1 month later: replacing the two chips solved the problem, the battery is holding the settings now.
 
Good to see it's fixed. I have had the coin cell and diode solution wired up on a bread board to my MVS for a while now with no negative outcomes.

I'll order a bunch of pcbs next time I put in a pcb order. I was going to order them but they are so small and shipping is almost as much as the board order.

Yes I am. It's just such a tiny board that it really makes sense to bundle it together with another pcb order. I put in an initial order a few weeks ago but have made some minor layout changes because it extended outside of the mv1b footprint. But I should have these ready in a few weeks.
