What's new

my capcom cps1 32n1

The C board isn't just a board, though, it's the entire second half of the CPS1 PPU system. It's non-trivial to just make a replacement.

Does it help that CPS1 was bootlegged beyond belief? :P

They had to reproduce both the A and C custom. Would there be a way to reproduce whatever they did to make the bootlegs but make the ROMs attachable like the B board is on an original set?

Not signing up to do it, I'm just curious because the more A customs die, the more we need to start thinking about replacements.

CPS1 boots did not reproduce the customs. There were two (three?) categories of CPS1 boots:

1) Conversions on real boards. At most, these required some fiddling with CPS-B registers to work with the donor chip.

2) Bootlegged PCBs with grey-market/trashpicked/midnight runs of real silicon. Look at the "Comco" bootlegs. They are electrical reproductions of a CPS1 on a single board. Kind of nifty, and very accurate, except for shitty cost-saving quirks (e.g. omitting the fade channel, bootleg FM chips).

These are almost certainly not clone chips, but remarkings of real ones. The same goes for many (but not all) video game console clone systems, featuring suspiciously identical chip package sizes and pin assignments.

3) From-scratch Actel FPGA bootlegs. These are the ones you're talking about, I think. These implement the CPS1 video hardware (CPS-A and CPS-B) at the same level that MAME does. They are high-level recreations of these chips (e.g. "This memory location reads xxx, that translates to 'put sprite on screen here'"). They often use simple tile engines for the backgrounds, coupled with a framebuffer system to hack the sprites together. Often these have inaccuracies, either due to not knowing the original hardware behavior enough, or simplification that cuts features (the common SF2 bootlegs can not draw as many sprites and drop text during the punch in the intro). These bootlegs don't even run at the right refresh rate, and I suspect it is becuase they spend extra blanking time completing the frame draw.

This last category does not represent a qualifier for a C-board replacement. They do not operate using the same bus design and timing as the original CPS1 video system.

I was indeed referring to bootleg type 3. MSTREET6 etc

I knew they weren't perfect but I assumed they had to mostly/completely emulate the customs somehow, so I was thinking it might help to reproduce the original chips.

Sounds like they're way off base on where you would need to be for it to function on original hardware though.

hi,
i got the 32 in 1 last year. works fine at this moment.

i'm using jamma selector to switch between my multi MVS (Dark) and CPS1 32 in 1 => very nice :)

good points:
- very simple to switch games (remote contrroller)
- japanes games version
- with willow and some hacks :). for hacks, don't really like punisher rom cause final fight music!
- simple to use, plug and play
- A board 12mhz => better performance for FFight and SFII' tubo

bad points:
- can't add more games
- chinese assembly....noo really! :) . personaly, i don't think so :)
- price

So waiting for the multi CPS1 Dark to compare :D

- japanes games version
How is that a good point? Very few of us can actually read Japanese, also this hobby is a lot about nostalgia so playing the versions you used to play 30 years ago is IMO better.

This isn't how FF was intended to play. People also seek original gameplay.

The remote control is indeed a nice idea. But... infrared. Do you play with your cab left open? It kills most of the benefits and becomes a gadget.

sure , i agree with your point of view.

but in my case i'm talking about my little personal feeling/experience use :) ,
- why japanese versions => pure nostalgia (i lived in Japan 2 years in the past), but in the fact non japanese version is easier for most.
- some performance improvement with (FF and SFII) => it's just a feeling, and not affect the game except during some scenes (heavy actions)
- for remote control => i'll make u laugh :D because my 2nd cab (used with this pcb) has no door! so no obstacle for infrared

have a good day

Yeah, I saw it, but man, why did he get rid of the case!?!

also, LOL at 16 in 1.

It's 3 games, and it's missing the two SM games!

Good question, I bet because he has that LCD screen to pick games and with the case on you wouldn't be able to interface with it.

Second Slam Masters game is for CPS2, just the first one was CPS 1.5.

Muscle Bomber duo is the second Slam Masters game on CPS1.5

TIL! Will have to check that one out, I always thought it was just the Japanese version of Slam Masters, not an updated version.

Yeah, it's one I've been looking for forever, it's different not just a ROM update.

@lydz can you let me know here how I can get the 15 in 1 CPS1.5 board updated to 32 in 1? I have two. Let me know if you want me to PM.
