What's new
Did you ever figure this out? I've been through the same thing with my N2 and eventually have scavenged together 1 rock solid one (touch wood).

"Boot failed..." comes up because the bios linux kernel was unable to load aeinitrd and aevmlinuz, normally caused by a dead hard drive. I'd have to take another look at the script it runs and what exactly causes boot failed but it's something along those lines.

In terms of the one that freezes, the MSI based boards used do tend to have caps go bad, check if any are bulging. The warnings that come up during boot is normal, it's the game setting up its work mounts (stores bookkeeping, leaderboards etc). After it goes back to the namco logo for a little bit and the screen goes back, this is when the game executable is launched.

Mine has been partially recapped with nichicons, but now the ones that weren't replaced are starting to go too.

I would troubleshoot the one that's freezing with a new power supply first, it's all standard atx so anything around 300w up should be fine, as well as check for suspect looking caps. Could also chuck some replacement ram at it (I had a stick randomly die on me in my test bed N2 I'm using for research on the boot process)
Also the freezing only happened during the boot up process, once I finally got into the game proper for the first time the game no longer had any risk of freezing, I'd be able to play it for as long as I'd like with no issues.

I personally believe its a problem with the ide port on the motherboard, or some component around the ide port died that's required for it to function properly.

The motherboard caps definitely go bad. I would have those replaced.
Looks like some of the caps have already been replaced on this board, I can tell cause the label looks different then the ones I noticed when these are usually stock. I don't see any bulging ones either so I'm not sure where to start, although I am aware caps can fail even if they visually look fine. I was thinking about replacing some around the ide port to see if that makes a difference.

Thing is I highly doubt it's the harddrive, it was working flawlessly the day before I got this error, and not only that I had another harddrive in storage that also booted fine and I was getting the same error with that one too so I doubt that one decided to die at the same time.
If you have a pc you can even live-boot linux of some kind on (avoid using windows, you wont be able to mount the partition there anyways), and it has an IDE port or you have a USB -> IDE, easy way to check is to boot into linux environment with hard disk plugged in and running, run the following

sudo -s
mkdir /mnt/n2hdd
lsblk

Find 5th partition on the n2 hard drive (presumably this will be a seagate but few are also WD drives)
Then from same terminal execute below, replacing <hdd device> with the name of the partition (e.g. hda5)

mount -o ro /dev/<hdd device> /mnt/n2hdd
cd /mnt/n2hdd
ls -a

If you see a boot folder containing aeinitrd, aevmlinuz, aebootparams, prod.img and an exec folder within containing boot and v386 (assuming the drive is 3dx+), the hard drive is at least accessible. While this does not guarentee data integrity it will give a good indicator of if the hard drive is totally shot or not.

My goal was just to own 2 functioning N2's for the purpose of troubleshooting. If I think a HDD is potentially dead I can just throw it in the other one to confirm if it's actually a problem with the HDD or the hardware. Then again I feel most of the time if an HDD is defective it'll usually let you know by the sound alone.

Update on the Namco N2 that I returned that wasn't working for me in the beginning of the thread, so when they received it they claimed it was working for them just fine without changing anything, so I asked that maybe his method of powering it on gave it some extra juice or something that got it to work, but even with them stepping down the power they seem to not be able to get this thing to not work. Which is a bit frustrating since I spent days and couldn't get it to boot up once, I think I'm just gonna ask them to send a different unit back and I'll try my luck on that one.

Trying to get the Triforce going and getting an error 31, I'm assuming cause no game is loaded in, so tried using the Piforce I had a guy make for me and it's doing this, isn't it supposed to be showing all the games listed? I never used one of these things before so not sure if I'm supposed to press something or maybe don't have something plugged in properly.

So I spent around over 2 hours trying to recap almost all the caps and looks like I made it worse lol, fans and everything turn on but unfortunately not even the USB's light up anymore and I don't get any signal at all can't even make it to the Boot failed screen anymore, could of sworn I did everything right, guess I still got alot to learn.

It's cool, don't have much opportunity to solder anyways so always like to practice, and it's not like the board was working anyways it's just not working more lol. I have some replacement motherboards coming in anyways so I should be up and running again hopefully, I'll put this motherboard on the side for now, I'll make it a project of mine one day, I'm sure it's still fixable.

Check your solder joints with a magnifying glass and make sure none are cracked/dry (will be easier to see this with some kind of magnifiation), and also double check the polarity of all your caps as it wont work if you put them in backwards.

I'm very confident I got the polarity is correct made double sure of that, I had to use some caps with a higher volts but I'm pretty sure that's fine since they had the same uf, I'm sure I might just have some cold joints somewhere, cause I had to stop cause my desoldering gun was starting to oxidize so it wasn't working as good and made my last few caps a bit messy.

I'm trying to get the Piforce thing working, I flashed the SD card and managed to get it to boot but for some reason I can't get the games or show up on it, just Ping Netdimm, favourites and shutdown. I even tried creating a roms folder in the root of the Boot drive and it still doesn't show any of the games after throwing them in there.
