maybe not a secret but something a lot of people don't seem to realize. I often see people buying $4 drivers and proclaiming that they must be high quality because they're the same ones that Bose use... :/

Bose has never been about drivers, Bose focus 100% on the electronics. Actually they have always said that they don’t release and will never release any kind of technical information about the drivers they use.

so yes, if you take a driver out of a Bose speaker. It’s no longer Bose.. it might sound like crap or it might not, but if it sounds like crap, you can’t blame Bose about it.
 
I just use cheap Visaton ones. They're the correct size. You'll have to cut the positive terminal though with a pair of snips, as the terminal is too wide for the connector.

I think they sound fine? If you're running jamma games, most of them have terrible sound, so it's not like super expensive speakers will make much of a difference (or even any).

Good quality speakers (and amp) only highlight the terrible stuff in sound even more ;)
But of course they highlight the good in proper sounding games as well…
