Hi guys!

Some of you may already know us, but for the rest of you, we're the Recalbox team, a group of retrogaming enthusiasts like you, dedicated to making video game heritage as accessible and faithful to the original as possible.
Our motto is : simplicity.

That's why we've been working hard over the last few months to bring you the first 100% plug-and-play emulation solution for JAMMA arcade machines: RECALBOX RGB JAMMA!

Of course, Recalbox RGB JAMMA inherits the same technology as RECALBOX RGB DUAL, used today by nearly 4,000 users worldwide, and unanimously acclaimed for its precision and respect for the original audio/video signal. (Each game is launched with its own frequency/resolution display mode).

“0.5ms input lag: the lowest input lag ever recorded”… hmmmmm

Am curious about how you tested the lag and also the 1:1 “perfect” claim re: pixel and frequency perfection.

Finally, gotta say that CPS-2 would be the most commonly used kick harness, not CPS-1.

Please note that the methodology and tools used are explained and freely available on the crowdfunding campaign page.
Tests can therefore be freely reproduced at home !
 
I don’t use emulators or FPGA personally. So I won’t be testing.

On your site you say: “Input lag is the time between a button being pressed and the system taking this event into account. Not to be confused with latency, which represents the time it takes for the image to update itself after an input event.”

Bit of a moot point if a Raspberry Pi then takes 3ms to update the screen wouldn’t you say?

We will be clarifying this point in the next few days and completing the table by taking into account overall latency, solution by solution.
(We're just waiting for the right equipment to be delivered so that we can do this rigorously and methodologically).
 
Probably best to remove that from your crowdfunding spiel too as most people I think regard input lag as something entirely different to what you do.

Claiming you’ve got the lowest recorded number in the world using a tool you’ve created yourself is a bit misleading honestly.

However, we made it clear that the measurements were only carried out on input lag and not on full latency. That's why we published the process and the sources of the tools used for these measurements.

We'll let you read about the tools and the methodology. Even if you have a problem with the methodology, it was rigorously identical for each solution.
The bottom line is: we're already doing better on input lag than the solutions that currently exist, and that can only reduce the total latency about which you were worried.

I hope we've made things clearer now :-)

It's not impossible.
Presenting the JAMMA RGB Recalbox has awakened quite a few people who, like you, would like to see the same solution for JVS-NUC cabinets.
After this project, we'll see if we can go down that route, because as you can imagine, it requires a lot of development, prototyping and testing.
 
Does this device have a video amp or anything on the sync line to get the levels to the correct levels for arcade monitors?

Tried to buy one from your website but all of my credit cards were rejected.

2 days ago I bought the full kit from your website. There has been zero updates on shipment. Is the product even in stock or is it actually preorder?
 
I've been playing with this for a week or so, on a PI 5.

On the plus side:
- I would say for the cave games alone, for that price, it's worth it. I have removed my xbox360 from my blast because of it.
- CPS3. 3rd strike. Enough said.
- The Tate / Yoko mode are extremely easy to switch from one to the other and game filtering by these modes is great.
- Resolutions (15, 31 or multisync) are also easy to switch and can be prompted when starting a game (ex: naomi)
- Once you put the roms in, it's basically plug and play. (until you want to remap buttons. see below)
- Great documentation and great support videos on youtube/website
- Music folder to put your menu/screen saver music is awesome

On the neg side:

- Retroarch is for console and computers emulation...and it shows in the retroarch menus (the menu to choose games does rotate) which does not rotated in tate. or I haven't found that option
- Remapping ARCADE buttons should be easier (maybe Its me ?) a joystick / buttons tester in the menu would be a great addition. (edit! : if you plug a keyboard, you can use mame's shorcut and everything becomes much easier!)
- see something missing here? yeah ... an ARCADE STICK!
- I don't understand why it's still running ancien mame versions by default. Why can't it run the latest and greatest gosh darn it. it says you can on the web site but the link brings you to a n64 page... This is my main gripe with all other pi to jamma solutions: MAME2003? in 2024 really? If I wanted a retro experience, I would be ... oh wait. nevermind.
*(edit: turns out it's running mame 0.258! see this post on page 2!)*

- For the raison above, it's a pain to go and get the proper roms versus let's say the "update_all" script for MiSTer
- Naomi emulation works great but can have graphic or sound hiccups, especially Noami2.


bottom line:
Recommended. it's a great way to easily, cheaply and quickly play a bunch of games on your JAMMA cabs

I’ve been eyeing one of these for awhile now and it’s good to hear an opinion from someone who’s writing it with the AP audience in mind.

So did you install a later version of mame on it or just had to go find an old rom set?

Great short review here. I have a question, does switching resolutions matter for monitors that are strictly just 15hz?

Glad you enjoyed it.

I downloaded the merged 258 but that’s just for the naomi and atomiswave? Whaaaat?

I ended up getting a fbneo « best of » set which has all the cave, toaplan, cps1, cps2 , cps3 games and a nice selection of other games. Really its plenty.

The ones from my favorite folder in mame i copied from my latest version and ~80% of them works.

There’s folders for advance mame, mame2003,mame2010 and mame2015… and fbneo has his own folders as well.

Weirdness.

Tate mode with all the schmups is why i bought it. It delivers: i’ve been playing every lunch and every night.

This is one of the reasons I'm quite tempted by it.

Do you know if you have blitter delay settings you can change? If I can get a close enough setup like the 360 ports that's a "plug and play" option, that'd be great.
 
@Mrhide Hey there!

Some questions for you that I have:

How does this compare to the rgb-pi? This solution is a bit more expensive and I'm curious how it compares to an already proven cheaper solution. And the rgb-pi guys have a "tate" distro image already available with configs and games included. In case you have already tried both.

Edit: I see the rgb pi is raised from 30 euros to 50 euros. Still cheaper, though more expensive than I remember it.

Another question is if it's even possible to run a newer version of mame? As far as I remember in the past, the only versions out there for pi were ancient. So all different emulator distros used the same old versions.
