One part is difficult to manage : the hinge. Unfortunately you can't do nothing with these old hinges since they are rusty as hell. I brang two to the manufacture to replate them but the plating layer is so thin that you can still see the damages left by the rust. The rust is so deep on these hinges that they left some cavities which can't be covered by the plating (I also tryed to nickel them but the nickel layer is too thick and the result isn't appropriated). Hopefully I find out which type of hinge was used by Sega.
The 350 mm Sega ''piano'' or ''continuous'' hinge of the Astro is made by an assemblage of two hinges : 32 mm and 500 mm large. They are two types of cuts on these hinges, a central cut and four corner cuts. Sega mandated a manufacture producing hinges and other home/hobby products to cut the hinges, drill the holes and assemble both hinges together in order to customize them (btw, the hinge itself can be used for different purposes). At the time, Sega did not order stainless steel unfortunatley but nowadays the hinges sold by the manufacture are in inox. So, you just have to buy the hinges by Monotaro (Monotaro is one of the retailers of the manufacture producing the hinges) and find a company able to do the same job since the manufacture selling the hinges do not respond to custom inquires for small quantities.
I know a company near my town using ''water pressure'' on this type of parts. So, in near future I'm planning to visit them. I hope they can reproduce the same cuts/holes but the guy I called there said the holes can be an issue since the hinge is not large enough, so they need to see it first. But, if all goes well the company will be able to remove the stem of each hinge, drill the holes, do the cuts then assemble a new hinge with both half of the former ones then add the stem and that's it !
So, the hinge is bought, that's the original one made the manufacture mandated by Sega, now all I have to do is reproduce the shape in order to make it fit the panel base.
