A unibios allows that.
I'm wondering if it's possible to make a single multi-cart that will work in an MVS as well as AES consoles. If there is some physical differences, can a switch be added that allows one to switch "mode"?

I know many people (including myself) have both AES and MVS (one for TV, one for my Sega New Astro City). It would be nice to have 1 cart that moves between both systems.

What makes a NEO GEO system be a AES or MVS is the BIOS. (and in the case of the MVS the MVS BIOS require some extra hardware like onboard M1/S1 ROMs, the dip switches and the Real time Clcok/backup memory for soft dips and book keeping)
That's why Universe Bios exists.

I don't know, however, if it's possible to "interfere" with the system in a way that make it possible to replace the BIOS from the cart slot. Sure it would be awesome if it was possible.

But if the MVS multicart will exist, will you be able to just plug it into AES and run? I already have Unibios in my MVS and AES.

I know this might have been mentioned before, but to cut down cost and save yourself the cost and headache of doing a production run of cases, could you maybe just release STL files (used in 3d printers) for an MVS and AES case, and let people print them on their own? Places like 3dHubs allow people to rent out 3d printer services for not very much. It could help save money and trouble for everyone.

I don't have case 3D files. This was made by Hardware Magic and they are real plastic cases 100% like the original. They will come with nice sticker and shockbox. I'm not very comfortable with the result that you can get with a 3D Printer in a cartridge that you must insert/remove. I will offer the people the option of getting a case from Hardware Magic, not a 3D Print. The guy has invested over 40.000 EUR to get the mold, so I won't be offering something else from my side.

The pinouts are different so they can't be directly interchangeable. That's why there are all those various MVS to AES converters that cost a fortune. In the beginning, I know it was considered that one cart would have both connectors so you could use it on both but I seem to recall that that was scrapped and that there will now be an AES version and an MVS version. If you have both AES and MVS right now, you should be able to look at the connectors on both cart types and see the differences.

One cart (to rule them all) would be nice, but would add to the size, cost (I assume), and make it more difficult to add a nice shell to. For the day I actually get an AES, I'd rather have a separate multi cart anyway (I am SUPER lazy! :D).

To add to the pinout being different, to reduce the number of required pins, the AES cartridges have the graphics serializer chip

as part of the CHR (character) board. On MVS systems the graphics serializer chip is part of the main board.

An MVS to AES adapter is possible (by adding the graphics serializer chip in addition to a mechanical wiring adapter. Using AES cartridges in MVS is not possible unless the graphics serializer is bypassed. That could be achieved by adding a AES connector slot to the system...

@Darksoft do you think the MVS converters price is "fair"? It has always made me wonder considering that someone made a better converter for around 70 Euro a couple of years ago (pity they never made any more).

I believe it was Furtek from Neogeodev.

No. Those converters are IMHO overpriced.
How about a MVS flashcart + a DS made fair priced converter pack then, for both HW owners? :P Just kidding, you have enough work as it is! ;) Can't wait!

As far as I understood Darksoft, AES users won't need a converter with his AES cart to play all MVS games on the AES.

Man where do these prices come from in the arcade scene? :D
It's not only some games, but there are superguns with standard functionality for over 600$ :D
