What's new
Hello,

Quick update, i am still waiting for some hardware i have ordered to be released from customs.
Once it's there, i will order the first test pcbs.

In the mean time i have continued to work on the reverse engineering of the KI board.
I may have some good news later for those with dead boards as i may have a solution to swap the CPU for a different model with an adapter.

I will also try to rewrite the VHDL for U92 (Clock Controller ?), U103 (Memory I/O Controller), U104 (EEPROM Controller)

I followed suggestions and i created a Patreon : https://patreon.com/user?u=19643365 (I hope you don't mind i post it here)
It's empty for now, but i will take some time this week-end to start posting.

Here's a quick peek into the schematic so far:

Joined your patreon, thanks for everything you've done (and apparently more to come)!

Guys, I have 2 boards from a friend, who sent them to Ken @ IRepairSega, which sent it back and said "can't be repaired".

now if Ken says that, I am guessing he is right and I shouldn't even try right?
I can repair those boards for you

Please put your location in the profile, that would help a lot.. :) And yes, i've got a dead one too. 99.9% sure it's the CPU.
I had one that booted like 50% of the time and then I tried resoldering it (I fixed a broken KI2 in the past this way) and now it won't boot 100% of the time.

I had a crack at getting schematics but then they were sold to the highest bidder to just shelve away like an arsehole.

Hello friend, my location is already added, I am from Mexico and if you have any problem with your killer instinct boards, I will do the repairs, I have new cpu's, I have been repairing this type of boards for several years. I do not charge for the review diagnostic, I only charge for the replacement of parts. If anyone is interested, you can send me a private message to give details of shipping for repairs. Greetings

Quick question @neku and @Ermac and others.
Does the board boot with no sound roms, and no hdd/cf installed if it it otherwise OK?

Pretty sure i reflowed the few loose pins on my cpu correctly, but not eproms to populate sound section.. i expected to see the rolling screen by now.. I get video, so the cpu is waiting on something. Using diag rom atm.

Yes, it should boot without sound roms and/or hdd installed.
I can help you diagnose your board if you need.

so if you're using standard U98 with no hard drive connected it should boot to test mode. but all the options in there that pertain to the hard drive should be locked out, so you can't do anything with adjustments. I was wondering why I couldn't access this again with my KI2 board, but remembered after I was using Any-IDE rom. and yes it will boot with no sound roms.

Hello, @neku , is it possible to make this diagram available in high definition? Congratulations on your work and I'm counting on us for the tests too.

I'm pretty sure it's the cpu but i have signs of life, so some hope. It's like the repair you showed on patreon.
CPU came with the heat sink already fallen off.

I have video, it's horizontal lines in offset columns, so it looks like the cpu is not executing code. But where to go from there, i don't know.
I know how to solder and have experience, but not too good with hot air. Can't find my logic probe atm, and have no scope.
I inspected the legs with my micro tweezers and found loose pins, and reflowed them with my sharpest tip and flux.
I checked all my work, and all the pins for movement, but none of them are loose, there appear to be no visual shorts.

the PCB show screen blue without sound roms and hard disk, seems to be bad cpu

@neku
Is it possible to run KI1 on my KI2 board?
I assume there may need to be a special u98 for it

@neku
I burned the u98 and the sound roms and it is working ok except there is no music
There is the announcers voice but no music at all
Any ideas?

UPDATE: I rebooted the board and it started to play just fine - weird

Okay potentially stupid question here, if I wanted to play ki1 on a ki2 board, can I still use the ki2 flash cart?

I used the u98 provided by neku on github above, burned a new set a sound roms. The game boots to the screen explaining the patches, and to press any button to continue.
When I press a button, I get the "fight on", but it just hangs for a second before rebooting again.

You will need a KI1 disk as well, the KI2 drive will not work with a KI1 bootrom.
