FS Egret 2/Windy 2/NNC/Q25 (Repair refund)

For Sale
How reliable/honest is Sharp?
I've yet to have reason to believe they're anything but honest. Parts aren't always available (like the Windy 2 chassis' flyback). We're /way/ past the point where most people are regularly having these things fixed at all, so it's not surprising that some things are simply beyond repair at this point from a parts availability standpoint.
I'm currently 4/5 repairs that went fine. The other is a chassis they've never seen before, replaced just about everything, and got stuck at one burnt out resistor they couldn't read the value of.

They only charge their diagnostic fee if it's not repairable, even if they do work on it and replace half the components. That's a pretty honest business practice if you ask me. They could charge for the work and parts too but don't.
Yeah they seem honest to me. They only charged me $55 for a diagnostic fee and $10 shipping back to me. I'm pretty sure he said they re-capped it too and it should work fine if I can find a replacement flyback.

Honestly I didn't think it would be repairable, but it was worth it to me to find out for sure.

Oh on another note, is it possible and/or advised to pull an Egret 2 chassis from the maintenance hatch or am I best off pulling the whole monitor?

The E2 has this strange issue where certain parts of the screen grow/shrink depending on what's on screen. To me it seems like a capacitor issue, so I'm thinking of sending it to Sharp for servicing.

Maintenance hatch brutha. Done it myself.

Definitely the maintenance hatch. You can just unbolt the entire tray after you've taken the yoke connectors, neck card, and anode cap off.

Just heard back from Sharp Image Repair, unfortunately the flyback is bad on my Windy 2 chassis and it is being sent back to me as unrepairable.

They said they fixed the HOT which was bad and an issue in the vertical section as well before confirming that the flyback is bad. He said it makes a cracking sound inside when he turns it on now.
How reliable/honest is Sharp? I have friend who sent out a chassis and they said the same thing almost. Its unrepairable. My only experience was for them to have a working chassis for my AWSD, i almost waited 6 months until they stop communicating with me. I ended up selling my cab so no big deal. Want to send out a couple of chassis to be fixed, but kind of worried of the long waiting game, end up paying for something they cant fix or worse lose a working chassis as im not sure if its the chassis or the monitor that's not functioning correctly.
I've said before it would be handy even for them to say how the flybacks have failed or which winding is shorted or whatever (assuming they are actually testing the flybacks and ringing them out and not just getting stuck then saying "dead fly"). I haven't really looked at mine too closely yet but if there is a common problem would be good to pay attention to it.

I did ask for more information when I was on the phone with them and the guy on the phone checked with the tech, he said it was shorted internally and they don't take on rebuilding flybacks. They were pretty humble and said it just isn't something they can handle.

anyone re-doing the wiring for their egret 2?

Given 1) my ground prong was cut off my power cable, 2) the egret 2 doesn’t have stock jamma anyway, and 3) even my wiring smells, im considering just doing it all over.

If anyone has a head start I’d love to know what you picked up and how you’re going about it. otherwise I think maybe AO has a parts list for the connectors anyway.

also still looking for that led replacement for my marquee

I was going to commission @Lemony Vengeance to see if would do full wire harnesses.

hmmmmm.. lemme think about this. I can duplicate mine.

I've made a few wiring looms for cabs that haven't had them and I can never get them looking as nice as whatever wiring comes as stock, so personally, I wouldn't replace it.

Wash it. Take it out, let it sit in some warm water and Simple Green, hose it down and leave it out to dry.

I’ll try soaking it, I did hose it down a lot of my harness is wrapped in plastic sheathes that just didn’t get clean. Maybe I’ll cut those off...

@@Lemony Vengeance worddddd. maybe add in that extra 5v on pin D? (One reference I found on the non-jamma-ness of the egret 2 https://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=28853)
I would be using a standard blue 56 pin edge connector and all required pins would be populated. the Hirose edge connectors we all know and love are no longer manufactured, and Sanwa knows this. They're selling them for $8 a pop + shipping on Rakuten :/

anyone have ones they like?

They had a tray of brand new CR7E 56DA connectors at JAEPO that sold quickly.

You'll have to pay a bit more, and consider minimum quantity and lead time, but it is an active part and you can still place an order: https://www.digikey.com/product-det...td/CR7E-56DA-3.96E/CR7E-56DA-3.96E-ND/8561489

Can the flybacks on the Windy be rebuilt? Or a replacement made. These guys supposedly make custom flybacks https://www.customcoils.com/flyback-transformers/ no idea what something like this would cost , if possible.
I'm quite surprised they said flyback couldn't be repaired. How hard is it to rewind a flyback transformer? I've done all sorts of rewinding before on electrical motors, transformers and all kinds of coils. There was only 2 factors to be considered: gauge and number of windings.

Also in general I have the feeling that most repairers only work at tech level. One recent example is those OutRun repairers that can't fix a board with a dead PCM chip.
